Got the phone call this morning, the mechanic said, "It's making the worst knocking noise I've ever heard". Needs an engine rebuild.

I don't have the time or patience to get this fixed now and nor do I want to throw money at it.

The guys over at the KTM forum said it's worth £1000 broken down for spares or even try and sell it at £1000 as it is. I might put it up for sale as it is and see if anyone wants it, if not, will have to break it.

Was riding it, cut out and wouldn't start. Was ironically riding it to the place it's at now and got about 500ft down the road. They came and picked it up and told me that this morning.

I'm going to put it up for sale this weekend when I get it back, see if anyone is interested at all, if not, I will break it and list all the parts on here and ktmforums before putting them on ebay.

I quite like the idea of these big ktm supermotos and have thought about getting one one day. Can other people attracted to this thread tell me, do ktms often eat themselves like this ? Is it due to them not being serviced as often they should be ? If buying an older ktm, does this mean you should do a service to give it a chance of living ? or would the damage from previous years of neglect already been done ? Does this make ktms a risky second hand buy, or do they rarely eat themselves ?

If you do break for parts I may be interested in the wheels if they will go in my EXC.

@colin1 - I did miss a service but I'm also adamant that this bike had problems in the first place. The history of it was it had 1 'mature' owner according to Raceways Motorcycles in Fleetwood and the guy had come in for a service/mot and test rode a multi strada and chopped it in when he came back.

Within about 3 weeks of having it, started running really shit and I took it back and they replaced the rocker arm and rocker cover? Then about 6 weeks later it had more issues and went back again, they had it for a couple of weeks and did a few other things but can't remember what. After that it was leaking oil but I got banned from riding and couldn't get it back to them. It was out of warranty by the time my ban was up so it never went back.

The oil seemed to stop leaking and the bike ran fine for months before starting it go shit again. Then it was leaking oil from the engine block bit where the seal is. I don't think Raceways re-sealed it properly but never mind.

It had a combination of problems from the start and me for not doing that last service.

@Barry_M2 - PM me with any questions if you are

Friend had the 660SMC, 3000 miles on it, 1 previous owner, full service history, sounded like a bag of spanners. He sold it before things got much worse.

Ideally needs a spanner as an owner, I know nothing and don't maintain any of my bikes I've had, always used someone else. If you keep on top of them, they run sweet as a nut but unfortunately, I let things go maintainance wise and with it already having a few problems it just got worse and worse.

Lesson learned though and I will have to get something a bit below what I was going to as I had money tied up in that bike which I have lost now.

Might see about getting a 98 R1 for a year and get a newer one next year now.

i live a few miles from "wasteways" ....bellends they overcharge so much its ridiculous £3000 for a "secondhand aalmostnew" YZF r125 i know for a fact that it aint almost new and that it had the balls ragged out of it as it was my mate who traded it in . Years ago they dropped my uncles KR1S and then tried to charge HIM for the new panel to replace the one THEY smashed ........everyone i know rides the 14 miles to pb motors in blackpool much better and the staff are actually a good lot not trying to force a sale down your throat Smile

I dealt with the owner, Steve? Ferraris, porsches parked up, huge showroom and servicing place with a race team van as well? I would of thought they would of been a bit more thorough on the service and it took them 2 weeks.

I won't be going back there in a hurry. I wonder if I should try get the previous owners name from directory enquiries from the log book and see if I can get hold of him just to see if he had any problems with it. I know it's not going to do me any good but would be nice to know if the reason he chopped it in was because it was starting to fuck up?

Col, im not an expert on KTM's but i know a man who is.
His workshop always has plenty of engines waiting for a rebuild...
If I remember rightly its the earlier ones (with black cases) that are the worst, something to do with poor quality bearings.

^^ I'm no expert either but everyone on the KTM forums say to avoid the black cased engines like the plague, this one is the grey engine.

Out of interest, someone who knows what they're doing with engines, how long would it take and how much expense is there involved in doing it?

Sure, wouldn't hurt to hear some other quotes rather than take this one guys word for it. He actually said, "It's 3 days labour, would take a day just to get the engine out because of how they're built into the frame".

Wasn't the whole buying process from the garage a little iffy with the first bike, or was this one from somewhere else?
