...or a BMW R1200GS as some people call them.

Short story; moved house in October, not enough room to keep 3 bikes that need regular maintenance so decided I would like something that does a lot of what I want, but doesn't require a huge amount of upkeep

Had a few criteria to fulfill. Firstly, I didn't want a sports bike - the roads I ride (the Highlands) are way too pot-holed and gravel strewn for me to enjoy with something so focused, coupled with the fact that I'm not keen on the riding position. Secondly, I wanted something with some type of fairing/protection - not so much for the summer (although it can get a bit fresh in the glens when the sun goes down), but I ride into November/December, and it can get quite chilly up here! Thirdly I wanted something capable of doing a bit of touring, 2-up with panniers, if the mood took me. Fourthly, something that was going to be reasonably reliable. And finally I wanted something that I actually wanted to buy and own, something that when I actually look at it or hear it makes you just think - 'yeah, that's mine that is!'

My list contained things like Tiger 1050 (capable, do like the triple motor, but I didn't seem to gel with it), KTM 990 SMT (I did really like this bike, but didn't feel like I could ever ride this calmly, esp in low rpms, and wind protection/mpg/gadgets/luggage options not amazing as standard), CBF1000 (good, but I just didn't really 'like' the bike, bit too bland - plus, I don't actually think I'm the biggest fan of IL4 engines, I like to feel like the bike is falling apart under me!) amongst others. I really wasn't that keen on the R1200GS, I mean practically every other bike you see around these parts is one - esp in the summer when squadrens from dahn sahf come up for a bit of 'adventure' but I have always liked the looks and the concept of the thing (call me odd if you want).

Anyway, to cut a long story short I tried one, saw what the fuss was about and went for it. After I came to terms with the indicators I realised it was pretty much what I was looking for - the right balance of power, protection, riding position, usability, gizmos and reliability (although this may be contested by some...but remember, this is relative to a 90s triumph and an enfield here!).

Enough chat, here's some pics of the thing!

It's an '09, fully loaded with all the toys. Have managed to put the best part of 500miles on her already (got it a week ago), and I can say the electronically adjustable suspension is a joy! It's amazing being able to switch between a fairly planted harder setting for the twisties and a more comfortable setting for some of the bumpy potholed tracks up here on the fly from the handlebars. Akrapovic exhaust is a little quiet with the baffles in, but does have a nice wee burble on the over-run. I'm yet to take the baffles out, but TBH I find that an overly loud exhaust just annoys me after a while in the saddle so will prob just leave it. Also as a bonus, I'm managing to get just shy of 50mpg on a twisty A and B road run - which comes down to about 45mpg if the speeds go much above 80-90 for any great period.

I know most of you won't be interested, but I just wanted a chance to whore! Looking forward to the summer now!

yeah, call me a tart but it was a concern of mine that there are so many of them about, but there must be a reason for that eh? Left it until last to test ride, but aye it pretty much ticked all the boxes!

On the pic front, can't take much credit for that - you'd have to be blind to take a bad pic in the highlands!

Quality pictures and glad you found a suitable bike!

What's it like to move about etc? Is it a big heavy lump or suprisingly featherweight? Are you a tall chap too?

Ewan and thingie Wink.

I presume the new multistrada was out of your budget?

That's the first bike of that style that has really piqued my interest - possibly just due to it's pikes peak results, though Smile.

Well yes and no-the 'basic' one was in budget, but I wanted panniers too. Plus I'd imagine that the resale would be shite without all the electronic jazz (plus I'd always be wondering what it would be like with it!

Was really hoping to go for the ktm but if I'm honest I just seemed to prefer the BM as an overall package...fetch me my pipe and slippers!

Will make sure and get my gopro charged the next time I'm out and about-see what sort of a playground I live in!

I know it's a cliche but yeah, once it gets moving you really don't notice the weight-think it's something to do with the engine being so low down. Bloody notice it though when you've got to push it on grass or up a slope!

No joke, after Ewan and Thingie did the Long Way Round, you couldn't get a GS for love nor money. BMW were beating buyers off with an oily drive shaft. If the wind was blowing from Austria and you listened carefully, you could hear KTM execs screaming "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU..."

The result: loads of used GSes kicking about now whose only "off road" miles are up the driveway to the garage. Thumbs Up

Think these are one of the most "acceptable" touring bikes out.
Absolutely love them. If I was to buy a tourer, it would 100% be the BMW GS range. Love them.

The roads look ace in these pictures too! Thumbs Up

I really like the look of the Tiger 800 I think that would be my choice for one of these bikes.

After going from a sportsbike to an 'adventure' bike i would never go back.
I keep eyeing up 1150gs's, but the money they command puts me off.

But it's not like they're that great dirt bikes either - the KTM or the two 800s (or the drool worthy Highlands) seem much better choices generally.

Have to agree, the KTM is a hooligan machine. Best friend sold his R6 for one, and now simply cannot behave.

After having quite a few goes on it now, I understand. Its a bike that you just HAVE to give beans everywhere. He'll loose his license soon im sure Laughing

I had a look at one in the Triumph shop. I prefer it to the 1050.

I was looking at the 1150s as well but aye, they were all silly money for what you get! They've def got more of a 'cult' following which is prob what keeps the prices elevated somewhat.

I was considering getting a test on that too (they weren't out when I tested the 1050) but decided against it in the end seeing as if there were any teething problems with it being a 'new' model the nearest dealer is in Aberdeen (about 115miles away) and I couldn't be sacked going back and forth (in comparison the BMW dealer is 1.5miles). They do look like nice bikes though Thumbs Up

Really? I found them to be quite low (and they can be lowered even more so), plus the seat:peg ratio is terrible (worse than the sv)... I was 'loosely' considering the F800 until I test rode the thing.

I've watched Long Way [Round|Down] a few times, and I'm pretty sure they're great offroad - as long as you have a support crew in 4x4s and a team of native bearers to haul you out of puddles. Wink

I mock, but I keep looking at the F650GS and thinking "Hmm...." Confused

Fine, if you don't have very high ambitions for your bike Razz.

I did for a brief second consider the F650, but when choosing an off-road bike, why would I choose one with a listed weight heavier than my commuter/sports bike, which has a really apathetic engine?
Especially when you can buy the same engine with more power in a circa 30kgs lighter package (G650 - appreciated you'll have to add a bit back on for 'adventure' stuff)?

The 690 I did end up with (and similarly the TE610) is a capable enough dirt bike that the first enduro I completed was on this. Very much doubt I could have done the same on a GS.

Then there's the previously mentioned engine which isn't happy cruising at any decent distance-eating speed from my experience.

So, for Rogerborg, if you want to do distance and SERIOUS off-road, then I'd suggest you look at the G650X, TE610 and 690 enduro.
And yes, I know plenty of people have done the Dakar etc on them, but then people have also done well in the Erzburg prologue on an R1 and I'm sure in both cases are much better riders than me.... oh and further, Dakar results do still point to KTM Razz.

Anyway, to drag it slightly back on topic... nice pictures, now that I'm closer, must come to visit some time Smile.
