I've recently softmodded the wii, so now I can play games straight off of a external hdd.

Are there any benefits of doing anything else with it?

It doesn't get used much atm, but see it as more as a social toy when i got my own place. Its just a glorified weight recorder on the wii fit board.

Surely the main bonus is that you wont have to buy games any more.....

If you're into your old games, try out the emulators. I have been using snes9x and mame and they work great.

Does the software mod make it region free? There's a second hand one lying around somewhere, it plays backup games fine but still region locked Sad

It's a simple switchable option if you have priiloader installed. If the softmod is an old one go to wiihacks and redo it to bring it up to date. You just start from scratch and overwrite the old softmod.

https://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/60921-guide-softmod-any-wii.html

I used Lego Batman, borrowed from my gf little sister, but there are other alternatives.

Oh and you need the nunchuck.

Also a portable hdd, I got a 120gb for £25 from maplins.
