Hi I destroyed the bearings on my Honda CM 125 last year, and have finally gotten round to getting a new bike, A CB tdc 125,

Its 400 quid, and has the typical carb problems, new tires and mot till 2012 as well as tax.

But what should i look out for? its done 39K miles, which is top end i think for these little bikes but it seems clean enough to do another few thousand till i take my bike test.

What you guys think?

First thing, get a primary drive gasket, get the primary drive cover off, remove oil strainer, CLEAN like it has never been cleaned before (as it probably never has been!) Refit, reseal casing with new gasket (DONT use 'gloop' any squashed inside the casing will clog that nicely cleaned strainer!) Fill with cheap oil, run it to warm, do some 'light' miles, as in maybe 50, and change it, to flush the engine. Do another 50 miles, and repeat. Then after you have done three changes, check the oil strainer again, and fill with decent oil of preference.
30K, if it hasn't already, probably in need or a rebore.
Check oil consumption, once you have clean stuff in there and flowing.
If it is using it, will need a top end doing. Not as bad as it sounds or as expensive. If it needs it, let me know I'll point you to bits you need, all in its about £80-£100's worth.
Carbs?
You can chase them for an enturnity, but if the engines down on compression and burning oil, you'll never get them set up right.
Starting place though is to check the choke mechanisms, to be sure they are holding open, then do the cables and balence by eye.
Theres a post in work shop, giving full instructions.
Otherwise, normal stuff, bleed brakes, grease pad and float pins, make sure the forks are sealing and have decent oil in them, check and grease rear suspension, and make sure shock is 'good'. Check, grease and adjust head race bearings.
They can be reasonably reliable, but they do need maintenence, and a lot more frequent 'attension' to keep them on form than most commuters, and possibly a lot of two stroke sporties, simply becouse they are a four stroke.
Oil change AT LEAST every 1000miles, strainer every 2000, and do the valve clerances and tappets at the same time.
Do the servicing, keep the oil clean, they can run well and for good miles, but ignore that oil strainer, and stretch oil changes, it wont be happy!

I would be able to run the bike around a bit before i do all the oil changes right? i doubt it will die straight off. Just a quick 20 mile trip to get used to the bike before i take it apart or my mum will moan that im taking my new toy apart before i even played with it.

What thickness/viscosity should this "cheap" oil be? might have to raid a mates garage for the shite he puts in his lawn mower hahaha

Here be some pictures, its had new tires/exhausts/good clean on the outside. 39k miles, been sitting since christmas, ran once or twice a week to keep the battery alive. But thats all, guy used it as his daily work horse till he bought a bigger toy.

Up to you.......
Think book says 10w40.... dont have to be good stuff, or synthetic or anything for the flush, cheap supermarket £5a gallon will do you about three flushes.
And its not taking the whole bike apart, its simply taking the side cover off as part of routine maintenence doing the ONE thing that tha lack of probably killed your CM!
Your call how long you leave it........

Looked at pics.... what plates it on?
Check frame and engine numbers, against log book.
Should all match.

THAT isn't a standard CB125TD-C, manufactured between 1982 and 1984.

Chunks of it look too shiney and in too good a condition, and the tank and side panels, and 'livery', at the very least, are from a late 1988-1992 TD-J model.

TD-J would have not had the horn cover under the headlamp, and a black painted swing arm. Engine would have been gun metal grey, not black, it would have had cast three spoke wheels and tubless tyres, and it would have CV type carburettors.

Could have simply been 'dressed up' with bodywork from a later bike with SIEZED ENGINE due to lack of cleaning that oil strainer (hint hint!)... but could also have been ringed, and could be hiding many maledies under that bodywork and gaiters...... though could have been well fettled.

Sump plug.... down there, infront of gear lever. Remove, allow to drain.

Primary cover 'off'
Oil strainer where I'm pointing with spanner.
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/LD07%20Eng%20Build/104_0269.jpg
dirty strainer, about the size of a matchbox, as it will come out
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/LD07%20Eng%20Build/104_0270.jpg
CAREFULLY scrape the 'worst' of the crap off it.
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/LD07%20Eng%20Build/104_0271.jpg
Clean meticulousely, with washing up liquid and a 'soft' toothbrush!
Refit by reversal of removal!
Make sure sump plugs back in
ADD OIL
and with a bit of luck you wont kill the main bearings like you did on your CM!
Remember THIS one makes 25% more power, and revs an extra 3K up the scale, or more!
It will NOT take the 'abuse' the softer tuned CM motor did, and if you 'killed' that... this ones chances aren't any higher!
Unless you learn from the experience and the poor CM's sacrifice wasn't in vein!

Hahaha Thanks mike! Mr. Green

i shant kill this one as quickley i Hope..... it was through stupid ignorance that i kept checking my oil on my drive way, which is slightly sloped, so i it looked like it had more oil then it did... and when it did die, i pushed it a bit too far and too hard overtaking at 65ish in 4th gear.... so yeah probably my fault! lol

Im picking it up tonight, so ill take it out for a test ride, get some 1040 oil and clean out that little strainer and clean as much as possible.

Once again thank you a million
