I haven't see this anywhere on BCF and the search didn't throw anything up.

https://uk.autoblog.com/2011/04/11/government-to-require-mot-tests-every-two-years/

Note:
Quote:
Three test options are being considered. First – Delay a car's first MoT until its fourth year, then MoT annually. Second – Again, delay the initial MoT until the car's fourth year, then test two years after that and then annually. Third – First test after fourth years, three MoT tests at two year intervals then annual tests. It's understood that the second option is the one that appeals most to decision makers.

Looks as though it's only for new 'cars', which I assume will also be for bikes.

Hi

This was talked about a few years ago. Personally I would prefer it.

Some argue that it would increase accidents, but think mechanical failures are a very small cause of accidents so can't say that bothers me that much.

Might well be more cars / bikes running round with blown bulbs and the like, but there are loads of those with the current system so if regarded as a major problem then something else needs to be done to cope with it (police stopping people for it like they used to maybe).

None of their options appeals that much though as I would want a straight 2 year MOT. Possibly at 2 years from new. Having the time between them vary by year just seems a recipe for confusing loads of vehicle owners.

All the best

Keith

Hmmm, I don't think people can by trusted to keep their vehicles in good enough shape. The state of some cars I have seen running. How often do you see cars with bald tyres and blown bulbs etc. I can only imagine how many cars have been driven from knackered brake pads and what not. At least a yearly MoT keeps these shitters off of the road.

But then again I know someone who got an MoT with the test having never seen the car so, there are ways round it.

Hi

True, but they are like that with the current yearly tests which suggests they don't work to keep them off the road. Plenty can go wrong in (say) 10k between MOTs.

All the best

So surely the answer isn't to extend that period? If something is fucked after 10k what will it be like after 20k.

Hi

My feeling is that if it is important to check it then leaving it for 10k is a lousy idea but if we put up with that then 20k isn't really any more of a lousy idea.

If mechanical issues really are a problem then find a way to deal with it sooner (such as the police pulling people up for it again). Loads of things are easy spot without the need for a £50 inspection.

All the best

I like how the Gubmint pretends that this is their idea. 2 years is already standard across much of Yerp, we're just tailing on.

Any sane system would be based on mileage, not age, of course.

I think it is a great idea. Any driver that has to wait until being told during the MOT that he/she needs to change a bulb should be fined.

Some common sense needs to apply and everyone should take care of their vehicles and not wait for an MOT to let them know what is wrong with them.

I agree with Kickstart, I don't think vehicle failure is a big cause of accidents. Out of those that happen to be vehicle failure, I bet the amount that include 3rd parties (not just the people in the vehicle) is pretty small.

we had testing here every year,,it was dropped because the cop's would pull you over and if you were not properly subservient..you got a re inspection notice ..the test was good to the end of the driveway at the testing station...it was finnaly deemed useless...I would wager my 1954 ford truck ..a beater is in better shape the some 4 or 5 year old cars...a 75 dollar fine for a blown lightbulb get everyone in line..

Top post in the comments.
Sadly this is a real issue I think
Quote:
Yes the two yearly interval between tests is the same in Switzerland. The only difference is that you take your car to official test centres not owned or run by garages, so you get a genuine test by impartial testers with no axe to grind and no money to make other than the official test fee paid in advance.
Here in the UK you can go to half a dozen garages with the same car and get passes and failliours dependant on weather they need the work or not.

UK system currently for normal cars / bikes (so excluding taxis and the like) is an MOT test after 3 years and then a MOT test each year (MOT stands for Ministry Of Transport, bit archaic). Tests in Great Britain (ie, England, Scotland and Wales) are done by licensed garages while in Northern Ireland they are done in government testing stations (or sometimes the waiting list is so long people get a ferry over to Scotland and use a garage there).

Tests have a max fixed price although garages are free to charge less. £29.65 for bikes and £54.85 for cars. Car tests include an emissions test but the bike tests don't.

For an idea of what it covers here is the manual (missing a few updates I think, but gives you some idea I hope):-

https://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/mc_contents.htm

The police can still do you for things although they have the option of getting you to "correct" a defect and then have that defect inspected by an MOT station.

All the best

Keith

What about 2 years or 10K miles which ever is sooner?

Unfortunately I'd be getting about 4 a year! Laughing

Hi

Way too easy to fiddle mileages unless we have vehicle tracking. And no way is any change to MOTs worth putting up with that.

All the best

We have no MOT inspections for cars or bikes in the Isle of Man at the moment, only for commercial vehicles. If a car or bike imported into the island is more than three years old then it is inspected prior to being registered on Manx plates but that is the only inspection that it will ever have. The police regularly conduct roadside vehicle checks but only issue advisory notes for defects unless the state of the vehicle really takes the piss.

Granted, but we'll have tracking - for law abiding folks - within a decade either way, in order to implement Pay-Per-Mile charging to make up for the loss of VED and fuel duty on electric vehicles. The tax must flow.

personally I don't see the point in changing the system from every year to every 2 years.

Last time I got a MOT done it was at Dyrons in Leeds and they charged me £23 Very Happy

what ever happened to those little blue MOT stickers they were giving out a couple of years ago - now they're not doing it?

They're on the pass certificate. The whole sheet is stickied paper and you can feel away the reminder at the bottom. It is a rectangle.

In some ways yes it makes a difference. Some peoples level of knowledge barely stretches beyond which wheel you rotate to change direction, let alone knowing which ones should have so much tread.

Think in Aus the system is that you need an inspection on change of ownership. That would possibly be more useful than a yearly test.

All the best

It needs too have a current MOT to use it on the road. The MOT test certificate is valid for a year. You can drive / ride a vehicle to a pre booked MOT or for pre booked repairs required for an MOT if the MOT certificate is out of date.

If the bike is off the road then it doesn't need an MOT until you want to use it on the road again.

All the best

Not sure what you mean by permit to ride. You need a license which needs the photo updating every decade. MOT is about £30. Insurance is hideous over here now. Road tax depends just on engine size for bikes.

All the best

OK now I'm getting the picture..over here we have to be tested to ride a bike..just once..different levels of testing renew the drivers licence every 5 years 75 $...plate fee ..same as your mot I think is is by vehicel size 27 $for over 750 cc,,insurance basic for my harley is 1400 a year. theft and collision is about the same...so not that much different then you pay.
