Afternoon all,

I'm looking to get a moped in the next month or so. It will be mainly used for carting me back and for uni (6 miles spent on a dual carriageway) and for Chinese delivering (I need the extra cash) until I can find another job. I know nothing about peds but all I want is something that is cheap and economical (probably go down the 4T route). I'm pretty good with a spanner and I treat my bikes well. I know nothing about peds but I would be looking realistically at spending around £300 (I could probably spend more but don't really want to). I'm currently doing around 300miles a month delivering and would rather not put the mileage on the car and as I live in a valley it's costing me a fortune going up and down hills all the time.

What would you recommend?

*Does flame suit up*

Thanks, James

I've just bought an immaculate 55 plate Piaggio Zip 50 2t off ebay with 12 months MOT and Tax for £350 delivered. Also just seen a 2009 SYM Symply 50 4t go for £321 which was a bargain.

If you have a lot of hills to go up and down then you may want more power than a 50 unless you don't mind going slow.

No flame for wanting a ped - if that's what you want, that's what you want.

However...

Make sure you have the delivery work added to your insurance policy - otherwise if you cause damage while delivering (knock someone over etc) your insurance won't cover you and the other person's insurance will sue your arse off. You'll also get 9 points for having no insurance.

300 notes isn't going to get you a lot. Maybe a peugeot or a SYM... just have a look in the local ad rag or gumtree and try and find the tidiest thing out there. You are mainly in "spares or repairs" catagory there. Up it to £450 and you'll have a lot more chance of something reasonable.

Sorry...

I thought as much. To be honest I was even thinking of some cheap chinese thing. It doesn't have to be brilliant just economical, thanks for the advice though! Thumbs Up

You might be better off with something that has knackered bodywork, but is japanese rather than the chinese cr4p - it might not look pretty, but at least it will still start and go!

Yamaha BWS did me proud in Australia, the new ones over here are 125 4t compared to my 100 2t though.

another vote for a c90.

if your budget can stretch to it the c90 will be perfect for what you need.

If you're gonna be doing a lot of hill work maybe 4T isn't the best idea, a ped will struggle a lot! Also for dual carriageways it'll be very slow! Even my old two-stroke used to hold up a huge queue of traffic on a moderately fast A road on the way into college in the mornings!

Are you talking about an actual moped (50cc restricted to 30mph) or a scooter (could also be a 125cc or derestricted 50cc)? If you're talking about a bigger scooter having a 4T wouldn't necessarily cause such an issue!

Defo c90 or stretch to a 125 (GS125's are nice - 4 stroke - and you'd get a good one for around £750).

Here's one https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUZUKI-GS125-03-Reg-795-GN-125-Full-MOT-GS-125-CB125_W0QQitemZ360358308463QQcategoryZ9808QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DDLSL%252BSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D8%26pmod%3D250787549024%252B250787549024%26po%3D%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8407220499425416745

Ah good good! Saves you doing 16mph up hill most of the time! Most people don't I don't think, bike and scooter licence requirements and classifications are pretty confusing and it's only a year of riding a ped and obsessing over getting my bike licence that led me to understand it all haha!

Yup, a "moped" is defined as no more than 50cc and with a design speed not exceeding 30mph or 50kph (depending which statute or C&U regs you read). Honestly, I'd rather ride a pushbike than a ped.

What you want is a 125cc scooter, probably 4T - or the legendary C90 All Terrain Vehicle Wink.

At your budget, you're going to have to take what's on offer though. Go by condition, then mileage and service history ("My mate Dan done it" is not a service history), then age.

Chinese-branded scooters should be viewed as a scooter shaped pile of parts, because of likely neglect. If you go that way, you might be as well looking for a non-runner for beer money, since you'll want to keep £150-£200 in your pocket for replacement bits anyway. Even if you find a bargain big-brand bike, keep something back for sorting it.

Not quite. Your insurers are obliged to pay out to 3rd parties even if you are riding outside the terms of your insurance. However, your own insurer will then "sue your arse off" to recover their losses.

Still, not a smart move to ride without valid insurance - you might be as well getting some representative quotes up front.

Also if you get pulled by the police delivering food without business / food delivery use on your insurance then you'll be highly likely to get done for no insurance and have the ped seized.

Pics of my 55 plate Piaggio ZIP picked up from ebay for £350. Does 45 - 50 so technically not a moped but with all mods declared costs £19 for a months temp policy.

I'd definitely look at a four stroke 125 for that little bit more power, and it should be a bit cheaper to run with no 2t oil.

I've ridden a Gilera DNA 125, that was alright, and I currently own a Yamaha Aerox 50cc (2t). Both are fine, both can be picked up for next to nothing.
I bought my Aerox for £60. Granted it needed some fork seals, a bit of TLC and an MOT. But still that's a day in the garage and £50.

A c90 would be the holy grail, quick enough, economical, loads of parts, reliable, but they hold their value really well so you end up paying quite a lot for even quite a rough one.

I'd just look at all scooters up to 125cc on eBay within 50miles of you, and just keep an eye for a few weeks and see what grabs you.

Of course if you need to deliver chinese you'll need something that can cater for a top-box. You might struggle to find a rack for quite a lot of 'normal' peds.

Cheers guys! Lots of good advice in here. I'm searching and applying for jobs at the moment but not getting very far (hence chinese delivering). 125 4T looks to be the way forward.
