Hi everyone.
I'm in a bit of a pickle with the rules of insuring my bike.
I have had it insured for 9 months so far and have decided to repaint the tank and side panels.
It's gone from Blue to Black.
I went to inform my insurance guys and they asked if it was a Pro job or not - I said no, done it my self (it's really basic, paint brush and Black paint) theres no murals etc.

Because it wasn't done Pro, they have cancelled my Insurance and charging me for this month. Another have said they will insure me, but will add 10% onto the Premium and I will have to pay another deposit.

Anyone else had this problem?
Carol Nash has just told me that it doesn't count as a Modification....!!

Cheers

Did you make it absolutely clear it wasn't experimental NASA low friction paint?

well, I may have neglected to mention that.....

Something about being 'more Desirable' - they aint seen my painting, it certainly isn't more desirable!

I dunno whether that's standard procedure or no, but to me it sounds like the insurance bods have been dreaming up more ways to increase your premium. Total subjective bullshitness, along the lines of 'women/professionals/teachers are safer drivers' etc.

You're probably better off out of it, if they're gonna get pissy enough to cancel your policy on the basis of a colour change, think what kind of hellish nightmare putting in a claim would be...

hi,
yup, heard of that happening a few times for the reason you said, if its a replica team thing, then they will see it as more desirable & therefore more likely to get nicked.

bit silly imho, & just an excuse to get more money out of you..

the other reason, is for fully comp policies. because, if you paint it different from oem colours, then if a panel is damaged, & you claim for it, it will cost more, as they would have to get an unpainted panel & pay someone to match it up,which might be difficult to do. (due to the amount of different colours & shades available)
i understand that type of reason but dunno what difference it makes if its a pro job or not though............

remember if you have changed the colour you might have to tell dvla.
cheers,
GAZ

I painted my old cx650 black and sent the log book off with the change, it came back black and I told the insurance. Never made any difference to insurance. Confused

I haven't told my insurance company that 3 panels of my car are silver and green... when the car is blue Smile

You should have left the insurance running until the year is up, then told the thieving bastards

The worst part of all this is you now need to say yes to the "Have you ever had insurance declined or cancelled" question. That can't be cheap.

THAT, Paddy, is becouse more RED Cars get crashed!
Or at least insurance stats when I was about 24 said so!
Seem to remember its one of the 'dafter' insurance scoring criteria, but, they score it!
Aparently some one even did a psycological study in to driver behaviour, and more agressive drivers tend to choose red. Silver, is aparently more passive agressive, while mute colors like brown are more likely to be chosen by people wanting to 'blend in', and likely to be more 'timid' drivers. Aparently the BEST colour car to have is green (subject to the variability of such statistics!) Aparently green is chosen by people who are very rational, confident and considerate.
Though it might all be utter bollox!

CB is black.... says 'grey' on the log book..... I didn't see the point in arguing shades of black!

Copied from the same thread in 'workshop'

I think I know what the problem is, but people here might find it a bit hard to swallow.

Let's say you throw it up the road and, amongst other things, you wreck a side panel; it goes into the shop, but they can't match the colour or the finish, so now it can't be put back to it's pre-accident condition, which is what the insurance company are committed to paying for.

Even worse, the side panels are only available pre painted, so now the shop want to paint the other panel and the tank to match, which insurance companies call 'betterment' and they really hate paying for that.

Basically, by doing a cheapo repaint, you've now made it more expensive to repair.

@mysterious - what colour does it say on your V5?

Your insurance company don't need to ask what colour it is, they've got your registration number, so they will use the DVLA records for any details they need.

If you ever need them to pay for anything to be repainted, they'll wriggle like an eel with 50,000 volts up it's arse, if the bike doesn't match the records.

I was always told green was the worst colour for a car, and that it was traditionally unlucky Rolling Eyes

I've never bought a green car Laughing Well except my series 2 Landy that was actually red, but green underneath...

Red is also the most popular car colour, probably why they are involved in more crashes.

Red car, red bike, I'm fucked!

Used to be. Think silver is now. Boring dull silver.

All the best

Thats because red makes it look like its on fire, they have to pay out for fires!

My insurance bobs tried to charge me 20% extra for a "modified exhaust" on my gixer, until I corrected them and told them it was stock. They do seem to pick figures out of the air and charge for weirdy things. I can understand charging more for professional race rep resprays but taking a brush to your own bike? I don't know, maybe they think that it wont stand out too much and is therefore more stealable as it blends in more?

I had a green car once and a tile fell off the roof of the house and fubar'd the car roof. It's never happened since to any other car I've had but none of them are green. Therefore I conclude that green cars are actually unlucky!

Statistics eh Smile

What about if its repainted in a different stock scheme?

I bought a bike that has gone through a colour change but not declared and despite me sending off for the paperwork for change of owner with new colour box checked the DVLA sent it back with the old colour still. So gonna need to send it through again. It's one of the stock schemes though, all black instead of red white and blue.

Thing is if get it changed on the V5 then flog it and new keeper insures it oblivious to the change as to them it looks like a stock scheme so don't declare it to their insurers. They then crash and claim, whats to stop insurers doing their usual to squirm out of a payout because its undeclared?
