Hi,

Basically my brothers laptop shut off by itself. When we tried to start it back up the screen goes black and nothing happens. When i try to put it in "safe mode" i get the following:-

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32BOOTVID.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\config\system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\system.log

And it just stays on this screen

If any solutions lead to me being able to use his laptop again like before i will send £10 via paypal , to the solution that works

Thanks
All help WOULD be greatfully recieved.

did he fall for one of those delete system32 things?

looks like windows files are corrupted or missing. you need a windows disk to reinstall the files.

put the disk in, boot from it, then repair.

shove your tenner though.

Looks like the drive has failed in some way.
You can try the repair install as suggested, but if it doesn't work you're going to need a new drive.
A repair install will just fix the operating system and will leave your files intact.

in bios, change the first boot device to the CD drive.
he shouldn't lose his files, just make sure you don't format it, and only either do a fresh install or a repair.

it normally says ''press any key to boot from disk...'' at some point.

if not, try making a boot disk floppy (if it has a floppy drive), then typing D:/setup.exe

if not, there'll be an option somewhere. try hammering F8 or F9 (i forget which) during boot up to get some more options.

Boot from the CD.

Press R for repair console.

Type CHKDSK /R

Press enter.

When it's done, try the repair install again.

If you get back into the machine, backup everything and get a new HDD.

www.ubuntu.com

Download that, burn it to a CD, that'll get you a running OS on a CD and will let you attempt to copy files off your internal HDD to a usb drive, run it for a few days from the liveCD and see how it goes. If you want to do a proper test on the HDD, something like active boot disk is a good start, ubuntu probably has something on there too. Just make sure you don't accidentally install it as you'll potentially cause more damage to the OS and files on there.

Hope that helps Thumbs Up

If you are worried about the data.

You should remove the hard drive and stick it in to a desktop pc. That way you can access all the files on it.

Or you can use something like this.

It sounds like the hard drives had it!

If you haven't done anything you know of then the Hard Drive might well have cooked the files itself?

How old is the laptop?

Can I recommend https://www.sysresccd.org/ instead of Ubuntu for fixing problems. Ubuntu is an excellent distribution, but using the right tool for the right job an all.

Smaller download too.
