I've heard that's a common problem, but I can't hear any strange noises. A big problem I've got is this is my first four cylinder car in four years so it sounds weird to me anyway.
Any idea how I would tell if any of the three parts listed aren't working? ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

There are a number of issues with the TDDi's but they are not as bad as the TDCI's.
Leaks from the turbo boost hoses
Wastegate problems
Turbo vanes sticking ( if variable vane turbo fitted)
Mass Air Flow sensor faulty
Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve blocked / Faulty

They use Delphi injectors, which have a life span of about 60k miles. So you could be looking at dodgy injectors. | Ouch!
| Gazdaman wrote: | Does it ever cut to 'limp mode'? i.e the glow plug light flashes and you're down on power. | No, no problems at all, 1k miles covered so far.
| Gazdaman and others wrote: | I'd say a boost hose has probably popped off the turbo, so you've got no boost. | Along with many others (I quote you because you're the last to say it) sounds a likely contender.
| Livefast123 wrote: | Can you hear the turbo spooling up if you rev it? | Not at all.
| Livefast123 wrote: | I don't think the TDDI's had the dodgy injectors, but do you have lots of black smoke coming out the back? | No smoke at all.
I had a look under the bonnet, but the turbo is hidden right at the back of the engine and a complete git to get to. I took the heat shield off and everything's all the wrong side for ease of access. I had a look around the hoses, but nothing obvious, not that I'm totally sure where everything's supposed to be plugged into, but all seemed well enough.
With the wife unable to ride bikes at the moment we can't afford to be without the car for too long investigating it.

No, but it can't cope with the smallest of inclines on a motorway and drops from 70-50 mph, often I'd have to change to 3rd to get it up the motorway hill (I'm referring to the hill going over the Medway from London towards Canterbury, if anyone knows it).

Hi, it's an 02 plate.
| Gazdaman wrote: | | KAL9000 wrote: | Im no mechanic, but if hes saying he cant hear the tubo spooling at all its got to be the turbine side not the compressor side. So something to do with the wastegate or the manifold. Could the entire turbo be seized? |
Or he doesn't know what he should be listening for? Or it's drowned out by the big clattery diesel unit. |
My previous two cars were a Discovery TD5 and a Passat V6 TDi, so they both sound very different to this car. Thing is, I know what the turbo should sound like and whilst I can't hear it, doesn't mean it isn't happening. Luckily, my wife is in agreement that she can't hear it either.
Just a thought relating to this, if the turbo isn't spinning up, does that eliminate the diesel pump as the problem? ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

I'm still struggling with this!
Would the turbo create boost when revving in neutral? My current idea is to unplug the intercooler and see if there's pressure coming out there... Is that a silly idea? ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |
