Well I got my chain and sprockets yesterday but didn't get back till near enough midnight so got on with it this morning. And decided while the wheels are off I'll give them a proper good clean as they're cake din about 1cm of shit. They look better but there's lots of flaking/etc.

Main problem is I found one of the seals was slightly.... fucked.

Guessing it wouldn't be a good idea to ride on it for a bit? (1 week max!)

And since I'll be having to change it I might as well change the wheel bearings?
You can see how raised/deformed it is. Neutral

Hi

With proper rubber sealed bearings I wouldn't be too concerned about the outer seal (although that one is a real mess).

All the best

Well that's good to know Smile

Still worth getting changed asap though right? And should I get new wheel bearing or wait until I get the wheels powdercoated later?

Yeh, that is just to stop crap getting in to the bearing cavity, not the bearing itself. Replace when you can.

Seals are too keep grease in/water out.
A lot more important if you're off-roading, say - but for road riding in summer it's less of an issue, especially, as Keith mentions, if your bearings are pretty sealed as it is.

Probably couldn't hurt to slap a wodge of grease in there.

What a co-incidence - I just did my front wheel bearings today. Not sure how you'll be getting the old ones out but if you have one of these slide hammer pullers, it really helps, once you drift one side out a bit first:

You can always punch the old ones out from the other side.
Use the old one to knock in the new ones.

Bearings REALLY should be pressed into place.
It is very easy to damage them when hammering.

Specially hitting the inner race to knock them in. It is hard material but the balls will indent the track and then they won't last as long.

If you plan it you can phannie a puller together using some M16 studs and nuts with a pile of washers.
Keep tightening until the bearing are home.
It's more hassle but a more reliable repair will result.

Here endeth the lesson.

I'll remember that when I change the bearings then.

Now I find out my battery is dead. Neutral

Just me butting in but try simplybearings.co.uk for replacements. I've used them loads of times and they have always been cheaper and delivered next day. Generally seals are marked up with the size or you can search for the microfiche.
