Hi All,

Sorry for the stupid question but can anyone tell me what size socket I will need for loosening the rear axle nut on my ZX6R. The Hayne's manual just doesnt say. All it says is I need a socket set with a 3/8" Drive.

Help appreciated!

Measure it.

A 1/2 drive would be better for the rear wheel bolt.

Just to confirm its usually stamped on the appropriate spanner that comes with the bikes toolkit.

Depending on the bike you may also need something to hold the other end of the axle

If you are going to purchase a socket set then you should do as chris says and go for a 1/2 inch set. I have several sizes of socket drives though I very rarely use the 3/8 drive. I find that it is too cumbersome for small stuff and not robust enough for the manly jobs. I wouldn't rate your chances of removing a 32mm wheel nut with a 3/8 drive very highly.

I just have a 1/2in breaker bar & the right socket for axles, no need to buy a complete 1/2in drive set for one nut.... Break it lose, then stick the socket on a 3/8-1/2in adaptor... & you can easily tighten it with the 3/8 ratchet.

A breaker bar is one of the best tools anyone can buy. A good quality 1/2'' complete socket set should be owned by all bikers as a matter of course as a 3/8'' set is only really suitable for ''girly'' jobs. I use 1/4'' drive for small stuff and 1/2'' drive for stuff up to about 27mm. Anything above 27mm gets the 3/4'' treatment.
