small cracks in front brake rotor...

so, i picked up my new gpz500 from the dealer's last weekend, rode it about for a bit... took it across to jimbothe's place in haverhill to pick up a helmet. he had a look over it while i was there and noticed there were 3 small cracks in the front brake rotor/disc.

i gave the dealers a ring as they put it through an MOT a few days weralier, course they shouldn't have passed it - so I'm getting a new rotor fitted free from them.

thing is it hasn't turned up yet and i'm looking to go to norwich this weekend to see a mate, i'm in cambridge, the dealer is in hemel hemstead...

so basically, should i hold off going the 60 miles to norwich until after i go to get this new rotor fitted? i'm not particularly sure of the risk associated with running a cracked disc... albeit them being max 4mm long... i can stick up a couple of photos later if needs be.

I'd get the train to be honest bud. Cant imagine a shattered disc to be too much fun when your motoring along. Think you have to change at Ely but not 100% on that.

Your front brake disc is cracked?
And you're thinking of riding?

Stop. Put the keys down! And don't pick them up again until its fixed!

(Brake discs have to withstand enormous braking forces, and so using one that's had enough abuse to show clear structural weakness is potentially suicide - if it fails, so does your brakes. And the time it's most likely to fail is when you use the brake hard - i.e. when you need it to work most).

No chance I'd ride it, not even back to the dealer.

Make them pic it up, fit the discs and then return it to you. There is always something a little suspect about the MOT when the dealer does it themself, loads of people seem to have dangerous problems on new bikes with MOTs done by the dealer.

I consider an MOT from a dealer to not be worth the paper it's printed on.

So, agreed, collect at their cost, fix and return at their cost, insist on having the old disc back (you paid for it, it's yours) then rat the bastards out to VOSA before they get someone killed. There's the name of an individual tester on the VT20 for a reason.

theyre picking it up tomorrow morning, fitting it and dropping it back to me saturday morning. bloke on the other end of the phone didnt seem too enthused though...

My bike was MOT'd the month before I bought it and they passed it with an advisory on front brake disk thickness,
In realitly the disks were below minimum thickness and the semi floating rivets were extremely bad, the left hand one was on the verge of shattering from the rest off the disk it was so loose...

Is it cracked across the drill-holes? I've seen quite a few like that, must be a lot of them on the road with the rider totally unwitting.

I'd give the rest of the bike a good checking over before they collect it so you can add any other bits to their list of stuff to sort out.

Sorry Gazza, gonna steal your pics

For those of you who don't know what to look for (veterans please ignore)

I've (craply) circled what to look out for when a disc cracks. It can crack in a few different ways but I've found this to be the most common, between drill holes and inner/outer.
I also had a DR650 that cracked round the disc between the holes.
If you're not sure, try your thumb nail against the grain.

That wouldn't bother me in the slightest. The proper way to prevent cracks propagating further is to drill a hole at the end. Since there is already a hole at each end of the crack I'd just ignore it and carry on as before.

i was riding it fine last weekend... i figure it's better for them to pick it up, don't need it til saturday and they said they'd get it back by then. and lets be honest, hour at most to replace it!

plus saves me a tenner on fuel

i'd have rode that no problem, if you can ride in snow and ice then you can ride without using a front brake
