10 days ago I paid £200 for this lump of scrap:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/228383_10150179335536028_541106027_6956233_2551644_n.jpg

It's a 1995 Kawasaki GTR1000, although a couple of bits were missing, it was mainly complete. It's supposed to look something like this:

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery/Kawasaki%20GTR1000%2094%20%203.jpg

Seemingly it was a failed attempt at making a chop, it had posh (ghey) petrol tanks, dodgy chrome bar risers, and a distinct lack of any sort of life in the electrics.

Mocked up to see what it was intended to look like, decided I didn't like it
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/222360_10150179375996028_541106027_6956782_4462524_n.jpg

The idea of "racing numbers" had been thrown around by a few of my mates for our bikes, so I got a pair of stickers made up. This job was more important that sorting out the stripped spark plug hole and the lack of electrics Laughing

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/230215_10150182110276028_541106027_6985097_5276503_n.jpg

I found a tin of Johnsons burgundy gloss in the shed, not sure who had painted skirtboards with it, but it was horrible, so I had a bit of fun

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/227392_10150184620646028_541106027_7002415_5232290_n.jpg

The bike had a pair of 36mm forks (possibly GPZ) that were shagged, these were swapped for original 41mm GTR forks, the bar risers were chopped down and we fabbed some brackets to attach them to the top yoke.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/249209_10150187007861028_541106027_7024495_7150099_n.jpg

I watched dukes of hazzard on Sunday, so on Monday this happened.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/248747_10150187507076028_541106027_7027831_5426346_n.jpg

Finally, a decent fuel tank (one of a pair to go on), had to fit some higher bars to clear the tanks, and the only ones we could find were anodised purple. Great. Headlights are off a CBX750.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/230365_10150188275826028_541106027_7035170_4706429_n.jpg

Last photo, taken a couple of hours ago. My awesome chequer plate "fairing" isn't quite finished, and I don't really like it, but it's probably going to stay (and will probably end up orange or black anyway)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/228012_10150188482061028_541106027_7036898_8110828_n.jpg

I'll update it more regularly now I've caught up on the backlog, but I don't think it's too bad for 10 days!

p.s. forgot to mention, I helicoiled the head, sorted the electrics, and it runs nice

I like the original tanks, looked very wide and cool. I can see why someone might use a fire extinguisher as a budget replacement but if you already have functional petrol tanks then it is a bit poncy to use heavy extinguishers just for the looks.

Function over form an all that.

Otherwise it is cool Thumbs Up .

I think that is the crux of it Mark. It was looking OK beforehand, and you went and used an old fire extinguisher as a fuel tank...

Not only do I absolutely detest the tanks that were on it, someone had wound bolts too deep into the mounting lugs, directly through the skin of the tank so I had good reason (combined with low capacity and extra width of the old ones) to swap it for something I like.

[edit]

If anyone wants to buy the ghey tanks, PM me before I fill them with thermite. Laughing

I'm in two minds on the fire extinguisher tanks....
I think the idea is 'right', but the execution 'wrong'....
And... that burgandy paint... and black...

Reminded me of the candy twist Scott......
Started me thinking of the vogue for 'Steam-Punk'... and Edwardian Copper on the custom scene....
I think you have the ingredients there.... and with a bit of consideration, could do something VERY interesting....
Like the headlamps BTW Wink ... but going with the theme you'd need red ones, in brass plated peaked cases!
AD on Ed: just thought... remember them square, yellow 'bulls eye' latterns they ysed to hang round road works back when I was a nipper, like before they set up ten foot halogen lighting stacks!
Going with the 'Scavenged' style.... that might be the lamp surround solution!

I quite like them, it was inspired by the fuel tanks on the black interceptor from mad max 2 Laughing

I thought you might like the headlights, and they seem bright enough although that's only from a test in the garage, it's not meant to look pretty so they're staying as is!

Not gonna lie. Fucking gay.

Love the bike, love the original tank. Spray it all black though IMO.

That tank with the F.E is pointless. If you're going to do that match it black. But it looks so out of place. I'd stick with the other tanks you had, looked pretty areet. I like it.

If the fire extinguisher was about half the length, and around the other way it MIGHT look a bit better. At the moment it will just look like a comedy penis is coming out of your crotch area.

You should have left the fire extinguisher tank red. Would have been awesome.

There's going to be a pair of them, they're only 9litres a piece and I don't want to sacrifice any fuel capacity - that positioning isn't final, it's just cabled tied on.

I did debate leaving them red, but the orange spray paint got the better of me.

The double tank was better imo.

Doesn't bare thinking about what that fire extinguisher would do to your pelvis if you ever got t-boned by a car.

The black & burgundy looked pretty good. I reckon it would look ace in a a really deep red Wink

The comedy phallic fire extinguisher may seem like a good idea but will get old quickly. As Marjay says it looks like precisely the sort of thing that would mangle your lower body in the event of a crash too.

Not far off, it's as square as one Laughing

As to the fuel tanks, I've wanted to do a bike with gas cylinders as tanks since I was 16, with the pair on it's exactly how I want it, could always do something with a ramped up seat if I wanted to change the back of them for crashability.

I think the fire extinguishers are awesome. And the belly pan is a nice juxtaposition.

I'd never ride it like, or if I did I'd want everything powder coated.

But for me, that's a cool-ass bike.
It reminds me of that monkey bike that's got a very cylindrical tank, I thought that was cool too.

Damn. I keep looking at the pic 5th one down (with the double tank and rounded headlight)

It just screams awesome. I want.

If you're going to use the F.E's why don't you ditch that weird double light, and use the rounded one again. Really suits the bike.

The round headlight is ghey and shit. I want good lights, not ones that look pretty. I'll be attaching a pair of Cibbie spots in due course.
