 |
|
https://www.santapod.co.uk/calendar.php
Sat 4th (weather permitting ) going along with some mates from my club on their bikes.
Never done it before, and my bike is standard, '57 plate fazer 1000.
Don't really know what to expect. Any advice? |

Queue, queue, queue, queue, queue, ride bike for 10 seconds, queue, queue, queue.
Repeat, with occasional diversion past the burger van. |

There's no line on the actual track, you have to gauge it from the lights. Slowly ride up near to the marshall, and the first amber staging light will come on. Then, the next bit is up to you. Make sure your in 1st gear and your visors down. Right foot on the floor, left foot underneath the gear lever.
At Santa pod, as soon as your both staged (both amber lights on) they almost immediately whack the green light to go. SO...if your second to finish staging, have your revs up before you hit the second light and be ready to go almost immediately.
To launch, you want alot of revs, in your powerband ideally, and launch using the clutch. You want the clutch up, and throttle on fully as quickly as possible without the front coming up. So play around with launch revs and clutch control.
Practice this, as it can be fairly scary if your not used to pinning it from a standstill, and read about it online a bit....Good luck! ____________________ Currently Riding - 2002 Aprilia RSV1000 Mille |

Hi
If you want to do a burn out do that on the wet patch. You actual start is between 2 lines, so creep forward until you are position correctly.
You don't really need much revs on a normal bike. The speed you accelerate is down to torque which is fair constant through the revs and drops off at higher revs (well, unless you have a bike in a high state of tune - or a sports 2 stroke). Better to start at fairly low revs, minimise the clutch slipping and be using as much throttle as possible as soon as possible.
All the best

on a litre the trick is to get the clutch out as quick as possible.
slipping the clutch is for under powered bikes, try and get that clutch out as soon as you can, i usually launch at about 6k revs on the r1 in a race, slip the clutch for a second or two then roll on the power as hard as you can without the front coming up. ____________________ follow my racing season

As the others have said for the start. Leave your tyre pressures where they are.
Once you're rolling get yourself crounched down and all your arms and legs tucked in as soon as possible.
If you're Angelgrinder they'll be a blue B1H ahead of you as well. ____________________ My Flickr |

I'll probably start conservatively at about 4k, and build up from there.
Day to day riding I pull away at tick over, tried some half hearted launches yesterday to get the feel, and 4k is fine, 5to7 it all starts lifting up and feeling a bit skittish.
I can ride laid over the tank all tucked in, I usually wear an open face crash helmet on the road, and often tuck down out of the wind when I get a move on.
So, I plan to just pull away, get into second ducked down and tucked in and take it from there.
It will probably all go to shite on the first attempt anyway, as I forget to do everything I've just said
I'm sure I'll get better as the day goes on, most of all I shall have fun with a bunch of mates, most of whom will be quicker. |

You'll definately get better during the day as you get more confident.
Also, you'll find out which gears work best, I tried to hold 3rd gear, but it would hit the limiter just before the finish line, so you'll need to keep an eye on that. And make sure you whack the gear lever hard enough that you don't hit any false neutrals ____________________ Currently Riding - 2002 Aprilia RSV1000 Mille |

Top man, you were out there doing it, was it a good buzz and what did you learn?
The time on track is pretty limited but the craic is good

I learned that what appear to be knackered old ford rust heaps can go like the proverbial off a shovel!
That I don't suffer from nerves on the start line, but my heart goes like a jack hammer when I've slowed down at the other end.
That I really, really do need to kick hard into second, cos I did get into neutral one run. Still, I stayed calm, let off the throttle, adjusted my speed, aborted the run and cruised to the finish line.
Refused to take any stick from my mates in the stands that were not running, at least I put my money where my mouth was.
That time is weird, actual time on the track is seconds, yet it seems to stretch out and last longer. I didn't think it was a waste of time at all, I loved every minute of the day, seeing the cars in the queues, talking to the other bikers in the queues, watching from the stands, the whole lot. Great fun. |
