Well I've had my XJ900 near on a year now. It's been a great bike, so reliable and it's still bloody quick!
However, thinking ahead to the colder months towards the end of the year and I'd be better off with an off roader. I'd feel safer on icy/snowy roads.

My problem is I have no idea what to get next. I want the acceleration (or faster!) of the xj900 but I don't need the top speed. My last bike was an SLR650, which I thoroughly enjoyed but I do want something quicker than that. Any ideas please!? Shocked

Thumbs Up

(7 year gap), BMW F650 (Relaxing ride). Aprilia Caponord ETV1000 (Big and bold). Yamaha FZS600 (got me in trouble too quick!).
Current: Yamaha TDM 900 (Comfy, light but big, power when needed).

I was very happy knocking about between an (old shape) XJ900 and my Super Tenere (750) ... the punchiness of the Super Tenere made up for the 150 less horses.

If I found myself in your shoes, I would keep the XJ and get something small, cheap and light for depths of winter work.

The reason why I say this is because I know how versatile my XJ 750 (pre-pre-Diversion!) is, and I also know if there is one thing it's particularly awful at, it's ice and snow. While the 750 is older than your Diversion, it's closely related in that it is a heavy four-cylinder shaft drive bike built with comfortable road riding in mind, and realistically the bike I would buy if I wanted to replace my XJ would be the 900.

If you want to stick to one bike I'm not sure what I would suggest, but with two bikes you have the option of having all the characteristics you want, just not at the same time.

Agree, last winter I had a ZZR600 and a RXS100.

The rxs was great for going out on icey snowy roads, thin tyres to help cut through ice (supposedly). Low power so as not to spin up the rear all the time like the ZZR, and light weight so easy to pick up when it inevitably got binned in the ice. Plus when dropped about the worst damage was a snapped clutch lever or indie, most of the time was fine.

This. I went around the clock on my works XJ (pre-Divvy 900) and still regret not taking it with me when I left the company.

And there's no chain, so effectively the crank runs all the way to the back wheel Cool

Excellent, thanks for all the replies!

I reckon you might be right about the regrets if I sold the XJ - what would I do next year! Unfortunately I just don't have the space or the understanding wife for a 2nd bike for winter use... snow chains it is then!! Wink Laughing

Bikes are inherently crap in ice/snow, consider stealing the wife's car and keeping the XJ.

Forum etiquette is very complicated here. I guess I shouldn't ask a bike related question on this forum without upsetting the regulars.

No, it's very simple. Don't dig up a year old thread for an answer google would easily have provided.
