Hi,

got a load of aluminium sheet, its about 4-5mm thick. Trying to cut it and struggling. Using an angle grinder with a 2mm cutting disk but it isnt behaving. Best way of describing it, the metal get fucking hot, but doesnt cut properly. Its like im trying to cut fucking diamond with a breadknife!
Any better suggestion on how to cut the sheet properly? Its too think for snips, i think its too thick for a jigsaw?
Ta

silly question... are you using a metal cutter on the angle grinder? If you're using a stone cutter it will just rub the metal.... you would be just as well using a bit of sand paper.

Either that or get something like a dremmel or jigsaw with metal cutting blade

Normal circular saw would work, but you gotta wear gloves, eye protection and ear defenders (for the whole street) Very Happy

Otherwise nibbler or jig-saw as you have done.

It did seem pretty damn loud, my ears were ringing afterwards. Is that common with aluminium, never had a problem cutting steel before?

The disk was a commonal angle grinder disk that said Metal Cutting on it. I guess it was made of ceramic or some form of stone? Looked kinda like this:

Cheers Smile

A hacksaw works pretty effectively too.

Except that one time I got a sheet of what turned out to be dural out of a scrap centrifuge. That was seriously hard work but made a lovely fork brace/mudguard mounting.

A metal cutting disc will clog if used on aluminium or any other non-ferrous metal. Similarly a fine toothed metal jigsaw blade will clog and overheat when used on aluminium. I find using a coarse wood cutting blade or a plastic cutting blade to be the most effective method.
