Hello all, i bought a Yamaha EW 50cc Slider for very little money, with the idea of tidying it up and selling it on at a profit, It ran fine and pulled 55mph on the speedo so i was quite happy with it (for a bit of fun)

Anyway all of a sudden the bike started misfiring when i started it, i didnt use it just left it in the garage now i`ve gone back to the bike it wont start at all, It has a nice blue spark and the plug gets soaking wet in fuel, so i`m stuck, any suggestions on what to check next?

It was backfiring at first when i tried to start it, but now it just doesnt make any hint of coming to life...

Thanks for any advice

Personally i would check the Coil purely because i had the same problems on my scooter and it turned out to be the coil breaking down under load.

Another good thing to check is your reed block it's under the inlet manifold (which is underneath the carb) It only takes 5 minutes to get out, if you don't know what your doing just remember what goes where it's only a few Pipes and 1 or 2 cables.

Once you get the reed block out you will see little petals, if any of the petals are damaged you need a new one. hold the block up to the sunlight and look at the petals (from the inside) and if you can see ANY light you need a new reed block.

It's also wise to give the carb a cleanout while you have it out.
Good luck Thumbs Up

if it won't do as its told, I suggest you thrash it with a large branch, preferably from a birch tree

seriously, it just sounds like you've flooded it, leave it alone and go back to it later or fit a fresh plug

Hi took the carb and reed off they were fine, so cleaned everything and put back together, but still nothing! How do I check the coil? There is a good spark and getting fuel I think it's something and nothing but it just won't start no matter what!!!

auto choke? seen umpteen of them stick, especially if the scoot is laid up for any length of time.
the pin gets gummed up & chokes always on, hence the flooding.
cheers,

The chokes on a lever, I cleaned the carb out and checked the choke, seamed to work fine, not sure if it's an electrical fault but don't know what to check!! Cheers

Hi not fitted a new plug as yet but will be getting one from halfords tommorow, after pulling the plug out and cleaning it a few times, i was getting a millisecond of running time, i repeated this about 30 times, then eventually it started to run for about a minute, but would not rev and if i even touched the throttle it died, anyway it ran again for a few times, wouldn`t rev just and bearly running.

So i took the plug out again and it was very black and sooty...on another note the lights dont seam to be working now either, maybe nothing to do with it but can you think of a reason they wouldnt be working it the engine isnt right?

the horn, indicators, brake lights all work but lights dont...

Thanks again for the help

Solved the problem,

I took the earth wire off the starter motor and cleaned it up then put it back on along with a new plug, (altho i could only get an 8 instead of the recomended 9 rated plug)

Anyway she seams to be running sweet now, thanks everyone for the help and advice..
