Chain came off - Honda 125

Evening all.

The chain came off of my honda cityfly this evening on the way home from work.

Left the car park as usual, heard a little knock, but thought it was just a bump in the road. About 100 yards down the road the chain came off and locked the back wheel. Cue skidding and needing a change of boxers. Managed to drag the bike, back wheel locked, out of the middle of the road.

I then got the chain back on, tested it out around a car park, and decided to try and nurse the bike home. Just around the corner from my house and it happens again. Not surprising i guess.

Now what i want to know is why this happened? Would it just be because the chain was too loose? or would there be another reason.

Looks like the rear sprocket has been quite badly damaged by this, so need a new one of them. Possibly a new chain.

When did you last check your chain tension? What condition are your sprockets in?

Check that the chain hasn't done any more damage.

As Joe says, poorly adjusted chain (i.e way too slack) or worn sprockets could cause this.

no chain mainteance? Have you left it to get really slacked? There isn't really any other reasons other than badly worn sprockets

The chain seemed fine to me, and i do try and check it as much as possible. I did rack up the miles over the weekend though, so i guess it has loosened itself. I can't see any more damage other than sever scratching to the frame and the need for a new rear sprocket.

Guess i'll have to get the rear wheel off over the weekend and have a proper look.

I'd change the chain too, you don't know what links have been weakened by being jammed. Since you've got to do the rear sprocket, might as well get the full set so you know what you're dealing with from now on.

No offence to the OP but some people think they have lubed the chain really well so its nice and oily but forget to tension the chain!

cheers for all the quick responses everyone. obviously my fault for the lack of checking after such extensive use over the weekend.

i'll be sure to get a chain with the sprocket, was planning on it anyway.
