Returned to bike after finishing work to discover plastic side panel which houses my cig lighter totally melted, attempted to start bike and discovered that the battery was dead which I realised was a very good thing as the bike could of caught fire if the lighter got any hotter, called AA out and on inspection we discovered that some scrote jammed something in the lighter with the intention of burning my bandit to the ground, anybody else with cig lighters on your bike ..be wary where you park or keep the lighter hidden, that is all.[/img]

Or wire it through a relay on the ignition so it only has voltage supplied to it when the key is in.

Cheers

So it was neither fused nor operated by a relay then?

Can you remove your seat via key? If so just wire it so its out of sight? I used to charge the phone on my old CB when i was on it. Had it wired so it would go off when the ignition was off.

rewire it and use a relay operated by something only live when the ignition is on (something like the rear brake light power supply). that way you need the key in and ignition on to operate the lighter.

oh, i would consider trying to move it then. If some one can stick some thing in it is there a possibility of rain getting into it?

What's wrong with a 25p disposable gas lighter? Assuming you don't need to run any electrical gizmos.

Sounds like an amateur bodge-up, obviously the wrong fuse, short circuiting the lighter should have blown the fuse before the wiring got dangerously hot, that's basically the point of a fuse, to prevent electrical fires from overheating wiring.

And of course the lighter should have been relayed through the ignition to prevent it flattening the battery.

Do you HONESTLY believe ANYONE actually uses a car style cigarette lighter on a motorcycle?

12v socket = phone charger, mp3 player charger, satnav charger etc

Keep up at the back eh? Laughing

Cheers

Virus, after 28 years driving absolutely NOTHING would surprise me, I mean you wouldn't expect to see someone doing 70 on the M1 reading a broadsheet newspaper propped up on the steering wheel would you? I admit seeing that DID surprise me.

This. Although, I'd prefer a device-specific type of charger/mount, it's not often you have to charge your phone, your laptop, your mp3 player on a universal car cig lighter... GPS on the other hand. Wink

Shouldn't have melted if there was a fuse installed. Don't tell me it covered the ground wire. Shocked

It shouldn't matter which wire the fuse is on, it'll get the same current through it either way.

I run a 12V socket fused but unrelayed since I want power even when the ignition is off. It came in handy yesterday when I left the parking lights on overnight ( Embarassed ) and could pour some electrons in through the socket without even taking the seat off.

If someone wants to knacker your bike, they'll knacker it. There's plenty of easily accessible wiring and fuel lines to be cut. Or they could just kick it over.

You could still have the socket as dual purpose by wiring it directly to the battery with a diode to accept charge, and relayed to the battery via some ignition activated live to power your electronic gizmo's.

Have some Karma for the insight, although I do actually want it live with the ignition off.

Fit a swtich then thats in an easy plase to get at it but isnt visable unless you know where it is. So you dont have to have the ignition on but when the switch is off it still cuts the power.

Or just use wire in a switch with a LED on your handlebars and just switch it on when you want to use it?

About as much use as tits on a fish. Charge your i-pod, rampant rabbit, i phone 4 etc at home first then stop for a fag and watch the world go by, lighting it prefferably with a zippo.
The worlds gone mad.

While we're on the subject of wiring... I've got a 12v -5v mini USB adaptor that I want to fit to my Buell. Its got an inline fuse and everything... I shouldn't need a relay to fit it should I? I should just wire it to the taillight feed?
