Hi, just like to start a new thread regarding this matter. How many of you have had a tax disk nicked in recent times and what measures would you take to prevent it from ever occurring again. I would also like to get correct advice by anybody in the Traffic Police Squad, G... or somebody.

How i go about this is that i usually keep a scanned copy of my tax disk displayed and the original under the saddle, so i can instantly show and prove i have it when prompted. I used to keep the tax disk on my keychain, but when i lost my set of keys, i was also 15 quid out of pocket... I also find those hexagon bolt tax disk holders rather "crap"... Sure they do a good job as an anti-tamper device, but whose to say that someone wont still nick it by removing the bolt on which it's secured to.

I really do need advice and i want to it the correct and legal way... Hate to lose 15 quid unneccessarily every year due to my tax being stolen... even more crucial when i'll be going uni next year.

Thanx for your help guys

Errrm Thinking .

For the most part, my involvement with traffic police has been a bad thing Confused.

I've never had a problem with it myself, even had it gaffa taped on to the tank with a bit of clear plastic on my klr650.

Never heard of anyone getting done that's had it under their seat etc.

You can get security bolts for exhausts etc that take a special 'key' to undo them, you could look at getting a similar thing for the tax disc. Probably cost more than a replacement tax disc though.

Fairly sure that you can claim the remainder of the disk back if it's nicked anyway. There's a lost/stolen/destroyed form.

Just an idea, but what about replacing the securing bolt with a torx head bolt? Only a guess, but I reckon the theives would go out with a few spanners (or an adjustable), and a few allen keys. Bet none of them carry torx bits with them.

If you go to a decent hardware shop you can get torx head with a dimple in the middle, which are even rarer.

For years now, I've displayed a colour photocopy of the disc, with the original at home, filed safe and dry. This can be produced at the nearest police station if required.

No-one has ever tried to steal it, and no police has ever done me for it!

Thanks for the advice... Only problem whenever i use my photocopies is that after a good wash or a downpour... the ink runs rendering the disk illegible. The torx bolt is an idea, but i doubt it i'll have the time to be fondling about with it. Thanx for you help guys

Oooooh, fondling, good word!

Someone smashed my car window a few years ago to nick my tax disk. They didnt even bother taking my stereo or trying to nick the car. I felt kind of outraged that my car/stereo wasnt even good enough to steal, damn them!

I got a call from the police a couple of days later. They caught the lads responsible, apparently they were well known. The police asked me for a statement and told me i would get the money back for the window. Of course, i never heard from them again...

I wasnt really worried about it heppening on my bike till you brought it up. Evil or Very Mad

Never happened to me yet, and I ride winter and summer. I must be using better quality ink than you! Laughing

It COULD BE YOU (lottery finger point). It's not uncommon for disks to be nicked... just all depends on where you park your bike. The bike park near Temple Station/Aldwych/Strand is notorious for getting nicked disks.

At least you've found some advice in how to prevent it occurring to you. Smile [/quote]

I had one fall off my scooter once, never had one pinched though.

Aren't they harder to cash in now anyway? I thought you had to have the V5 or something as proof you hadn't nicked it?

i have one of those allen key disc holder jobbies,
i found a space ( technically meant to be front left ) where i could bolt on, and then as i have a bolt on screen, screen bolted over that,,
disc visable, but takes half hour to change

had one stolen ages ago, if you do, ensure you have proof you applied for new one, as was stopped just after.

Most tax disc's these days are nicked my people who have a car/bike themselves but have no tax, so put a stolen disc in so it looks like they're taxed. Unless you're looking close up you'll never know which vehicle it's actually supposed to be for, and so long as it's in date there is no reason for anyone to check it closely!

We've had a few nicked off the hire bikes at work, and it's just local lads who put them on their peds. One muppet even booked his Piaggio NRG in just before he sold it for a service, with one of our stolen tax discs on it Rolling Eyes

The old fashioned way was to wrap it round the frame tube and stick it there with transparent sticky plastic. If you try to remove it, you ruin the disc.

On my current bike I have it somewhere obscure but still visible if you peer at it the right way (tucked up under one of the tank panels in a holder, it is forward and to the left of the rider and clearly visible, you just need to be looking for it). Here is the clever bit... The OLD tax disc is in a holder bolted to the mudguard mounting bracket in plain view, a casual thief will not think to look for a second one and I don't care if they steal an out of date one.

Another obscure but legal place is on the INSIDE of the screen on a faired bike, down next to the clocks, you just don't look for one there.
