Hi guys. So last sunday went to the south coast with the missus and got a letter from Sussex Police Sad

Got nicked doing 38mph on a 30 Sad
Must have been a speed gun or a van as i wasn't stopped at the time.
I'm a bit fed up because I usually go slow on 30 roads Sad
Oh well...

Anhways, what should I expect from doing 38 on a 30?

It's very easy to speed, especially when you know the roads, but it sucks when you get caught out like that. Unlucky, but don't let it get you down.

Damn, bad luck.

Just make sure you see the evidence before you cop a guilty plea. I'd expect it'll be a picture of your bike 5 yards before a NSL sign.

I believe the threshold for the awareness course is 36mph. Unless its different for each force.

dont know if its defferent for a car but my sister got done by a stationary speed camera (yellow box) the other week, she was cought doing 38 in a 30 and is able to do the course thing but i think you have to do the course in the county to which you were cought in.

dan.

Our office admin girl got caught at 38 in a 30 and was allowed to take the course - she was also able to move it from Leicestershire where she was caught to Cambridgeshire where she lives Thumbs Up

I got a ticket for 38 in a 30 from Sussex Police on the A23.

Shitty signage coming out of a NSL into a 30, then a speed camera about a metre in front of one of them silly small 30mph/camera signs.

First offence, wasn't offered the course. £60 and 3 points. Evil or Very Mad

Ive been talking to a speed camera operator at ridewell today and she said the threshold has been raised to 40mph.

I think Speed Awareness is offered in the letter you recieved with the 'speeding offence'

I think 36/37mph in a 30 its offered... I could be wrong.

Bad luck dude Thumbs Down

There is a high possibility that 1 of the sniper-pigs were hiding in a bush somewhere, right after the sign that changes from a national speed-limit into the 30 limit.

I hear thats where they like to stalk their prey. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for all the info.

Guess I'm not the only one got caught at 38 on a 30! haha.

The letter they sent me was just to confirm I was the one riding the bike at that time, etc. I have now to fill that and send it back.
Buggers don't even send a return envelope Twisted Evil

Will let you know once I get the actual thing back in the post.

I myself have never seen a speed camera van/speed camera operator that is not in some kind of sneaky position that is deliberately designed with malicious intent to catch drivers more easily.

The local ones for example, both of them are in 30mph zones but they hide around a corner. You get up to speed and then round a corner and boom, there they are. The other local ones sit and point their cameras about six yards before a speed limit change so as you accelerate to the new speed limit, boom, they get you.

Speeding tickets are nothing but a tax on the motoring 'cash cow' the Government just LOVES to milk. Using the Safety Camera partnership website, it shows that there are 4 different mobile camera locations around where I live and three of them have seen an INCREASED number of accidents (by around 25%) since they started putting the camera there.

They've also conditioned motorists into believing they have no chance of succeeding in court and that their best option is to sign that paper and admit their guilt to 'make it all go away' whilst conveniently lining the Government's pockets and making the insurance company money thanks to the increased points whilst putting strain on that motorist who is worried about getting more points and having to pay increased premiums for years to come.

It's a farce and I for one believe all kinds of speed cameras etc should not exist. As far as I'm concerned speed limits should be abolished completely as they are a completely arbritary rule based on what some Government scientists and fat cats think is 'safe' for the road, well that's been disproven already by the known fact that it's safer statistically to do 4-5mph ABOVE the speed limit and also they never seem to acknowledge that doing a large amount below the speed limit is just as bad as doing a large amount above.

As I said above, speed limits should be abolished and should be replaced with a regulation saying that at all times you should be "travelling at a speed which is reasonably expected to be safe for the current conditions". Doing 100mph down an empty motorway at 4am is COMPLETELY safe as you are only endangering yourself and maybe some animals (!) but yet if you were a perfect motorist who stuck to speed limits and decided that was safe and were caught, bye-bye licence.

The system is awful and needs a drastic rethink.

Heh, that's a long overdue rethink:

Earl Russel, in the House of Lords, 16th July 1907 wrote:

I regard the abolition of the speed limit as the most important recommendation of the Royal Commission... Policemen are not stationed in the villages where there are people about who might be in danger, but are hidden in hedges or ditches by the side of the most open roads in the country... I am entirely in sympathy with what the noble Earl said with regard to police traps. In my opinion they are manifestly absurd as a protection to the public, and they are used in many counties merely as a means of extracting money from the passing traveller in a way which reminds one of the highwaymen of the Middle Ages.

One hundred and four years later, here we still are.

But who is going to say the speed you are doing is safe to the conditions.
I may think that the speed I am doing is a safe, yet someone else will think faster is safe, yet someone else may think slower is safe...

Sadly we need limits imposed on the roads, as far too many people seem to think that no matter how fast they go its safe.

If you have a accident, then clearly the speed you were doing was NOT safe...... Be that 100 MPH or 10 MPH.....

Anyone caught by one of the big yellow cam's clearly isn't safe to be on the road, as they are so obivious.... If you fail to see one of them, then what else are you not going to see and possibly hit....

As to people who scream they are cash cows.... Clearly have missed all the cut backs and that number that have been turned off to save money..... If they were making money, they would be planting yet more luvly bright yellow flowers at the side of every road to milk even more cash Rolling Eyes

Funny how people moan about mobile cams being placed where they are not easy to see.......
Clearly people who have a very limited understanding of how the world works.... They are happy to break the law, yet act like babies when caught... Laughing

Police have always placed themselves where they will catch the muppets who fail to read the road.

Like failing to spot a concealed van in the 50 yards before or after a change to/from NSL - they place themselves where the speed limit seems inappropriate to a large number of people and conceal themselves so that good observation and road reading skills make no difference. It is all about money, very little about safety.

A great way of illustrating this is the fines, SORN and other PITA bureaucracy surrounding road tax (money) and the lax attitude towards MOT enforcement (safety).
