Wrong forum, also been asked hundreds of times.

I recommend the Hyo GT125R.

But other people will say others..

The GPR is ok, but in 4 stroke form, its shit.

Most 125 4 strokes are shit, I own 1 to commute on the super cheap as I have a minimal commute and the 750 is killing tyres in less than 2000 miles Laughing

Oh

inb4 "YBR full test" Laughing

They are all just as slow as one another.

The Aprilia RS4 looks pretty good IMO, as does the Yamaha R125 but they are both overpriced IMO.

You'd be better off with a CG or YBR.

Looks, you can SORT of get... until someone looks at the rear tyre or you start the engine, then the illusion is ruined.

The speed thing will never happen with a 125.

Do your full test then buy and insure a TRULY beautiful and fast bike for less than the slow, fake, expensive R125 etc. would have cost you just to buy.

So spend as much as a complete 25hp 2 stroke bike and you can get your £4k bike to be just as fast? Shocked

I'd go for an MZ supermoto style thingy (forget the designation right now.) Then I'd decide I was being silly and get a 2 stroke.
(My first bike was a 4 stroke 125, with hind sight, that was a stupid thing to do.)

I feel really sorry for you young guys. In my youth we could tear around on things like this. 70 - 80 mph, a racing kit to make it even faster (and more fragile). Why cant Honda et. al just reintroduce their 60's stff again with better electrics?

A 1979, Honda CB125 'Twin'.

The later Super Dream handles a bit better, and has slightly more modern styling, but that's not saying much.

However, original 125 Twin, Is not a commuter bike dressed up to look fast, it was built as a genuine 125 'sports bike' in it's day, to compete head to head with its two stroke rivals, on performance.... and succeeded!

17bhp, at the crank, its still more powerful than any of the current crop of 125 four strokes, and completely devoid of restrictions, and with a 12,000rpm red line, it's actually got some 'spirit' to it; its not emasculated by emmission controls or noise regs.

Later Super Dream, adds weight and an electric start, looks like a commuter, but goes like a two stroke, though tops out at 'about' 70, curtecy of being de-tuned from the 'Twin's 17bhp to meet 1982 Learner Power Limits.

Rather nice antidote to the modern plastic fantastics; looking like a contemprary 'commuter' bike, no one expects much of one.... until it starts wailing beyond the 8Krpm mark, making a noise no other 125 does, and shifting like few four strokes.... rather than the plastic fantastics.... The R125 and CBR, which actually have 'some' go to them... but no where near as much as thier looks would suggest... or in the case of the Chinky copies, with CG copy motors in them that struggle to reach 60.... no 'go' what so ever!

I'm still chuckling about a lad on an R125 who saw what he presumed was a CG125 in front of him as we hit the NSL sign, and thought he'd just blitz past me... and found himself struggling to even stay with me as we hit the twisty bits....

Mean of me... I really ought to have taken snowie;s L-Plates off, but I was only taking if for a test ride, after setting the carbs up!

Mine, we clocked on GPS at a genuine 70, two up!

Four Stroke 125?

Forget the R125 & co.... Same money buys you a full rider training course, and tests, and a 33bhp complient Hyosung 250, brand new, or restricted 650, which actually have some 'go' to go with the looks.

In the mean time, a Super Dream or CB125 Twin, is a rather 'jolly' way to spend time on L-Plates.... without breaking the bank.

CG, but I am biased as I still have mine.

They get a lot more respect than I expected as they've been around for so long, thousands of bikers have fond memorys of spanking a CG about Laughing

Also, if you do come off it then you will probably be able to repair it cheaply, Drop a 'plastic fantastic' 125 and you will cry when you get the quote for repaired/replacement plastics and any spraying to make it look how it used to.

im sorry but they are slow. all 4 stroke 125 bikes are slow. if you want to get to 70mph fast then you will have to buy a more powerful bike, it pretty much is as simple as that

new 125 bikes are so horrendously expensive anyway, why they hell would you want one ? 3K on a bike + insurance.

for that money you can do your test, buy a bike that actually is and looks fast and looks like a real bike + insure it......win win win ?

honda cb 125 superdream!!! if my speedo is anything to go by it was doing nearly 40mph in 2nd gear around 12,000 rpm
goes past 12k rpm though !! Shocked Shocked
they have 13k on the clock but they go past that i think 14,000 rpm is max revs (have to guess as there is no numbers where the needle ends up) Laughing
my 2004 cg was a fair amount slower than this 1983 cb125

Yzf125 is good, but alot of money don't you think ?

Plus they are slow compared to the two-strokes.

Any of the old two-stroke 125's would be much faster, genuine 100mph on the good ones. They're lighter too. And can be had for under a grand.

Its big and a good looking bike, the 2011 have even more improvements such as EFI and nicer styling etc...

Its pretty much as fast as all the other 4 strokes, apart from this is a V-Twin so it sounds better Cool

CBT = £100 (Roughly)
Yamaha R125 = £4000

Not to mention the insurance etc.

Full bike test = £500 (Roughly)
99 R6 = £2000

That takes it to £2500, leaving you £1600 to insure it, TAX it, MOT it and get some gear.

Thats all well and good but everyone always assumes that you have to buy a new R125 and that you always end up paying 4 grand. I paid about £2700 for mine when it was just 6 months old and it had less than 3000 miles on it. You're also ignoring the fact that in 12 months time, you'll probably be needing another £1K for next years insurance on an R6 for a new young rider + higher running costs.

For me, things went as follows:

CBT = £95ish
Bike (R125) = £2700
Insurance = £250 fully comp with eBike (I'm 38)
Gear = about £500
Theory, Mod1 & Mod2 (Done on the R125) = less than £200

If you look at the used prices of R125's, they tend to take a big hit in depreciation straight away, then hold their value reasonably well (as long as you don't bend it) and i'm getting around 110mpg from it. It easilly keeps up with traffic (and passes some of it) on a stretch of 70mph dual carriageway on my commute although it does drop down to about 67 on an uphill section, though to be fair the car doesn't go up it much faster either.

Yes, I'd love an R6, but at the moment I wouldn't be able to afford to run one (see my thread "Why I don't have an R6" in show & tell for reason why!)

The haters are always slagging off the little Yamaha, but mine has been perfectly reliable and great fun and despite being used in all weather and kept outside doesn't look like a rusting heap of crap unlike some of the YBR and CBF's that have been posted on here. Not everyone wants a CG or YBR, same way as not everyone wants to drive a Micra. In another 10 years time when you can pick them up for less than a grand, maybe people will start to appreciate them a bit more for what they are, a good fun to ride 125 that also makes a decent commuter for shortish runs.

Between Binge & Codemunkey, lies an awful lot of options.
And as said, even a 2nd hand R125, will only hold value if you dont crack a fairing... whats the chap on here looking for fairings mention, something like £300 for the main Left hand panel?

Insurance on an R6 is daft for most people; but difference in premium between an R125 and say a Thundercat, or a ZX6R isn't so big. Between R125 & an SV650 even less, and get down to an older GPz500S and in all liklihood it will be cheaper.

R125 is the same insurance group as a GS500; factor in the high 'value' of a newish R125, and the lower value of older 'big bike', and remove loading from being a qualified rider, and in all liklihood, you can insure something pretty interesting for the same money.

'Sporty' 125's JUST for the 'look' really are an inordinately expensive 'vanity'.

Whatever your motives, or however you try justify it, they rarely stand up to hard facts, and are revealed to simply be 'self delusion' to try and 'excuse' the simple vanity.

Fact is, whether you pay £1000 for a sporty 125 or £4K, they are expensive bikes, to buy and to run, which aren't fast... even the fabled 'genuine' 100mph two strokes.

Open the door unlocked by a full licence, and you have access to bikes, which are 150mph fast, or more.... if you have unrestricted licence, you can push 170 plus, from an old ZZR11 or an RF900, for the kind of money that would barely get you a top end rattly, dropped a dozen times Arpillia RS125. In context, 125's even the fastest of the fast, simply are NOT that fast.

And, if that's what you want, fast, trying to do it with a 125 is a self imposed impediment... NOTHING stops you riding a big bike, apart from taking tests and getting a licence, and if you can ride a 125, you can take tests and get a licence! So only thing holding you back is yourself, NOT doing tests!

If you want cheap motorcycling, you dont buy a 125 that is more expensive to insure and run than a GS500.... that is not 'cheap' motorcycling.

If you want 'fast' or 'exiting' motorcycling, you don't buy a 125... even a 33bhp 'restricted' GPz500 offers more speed and more exitement, than a 125.... even the fabled, and illegal to ride on L's 100mph two stroke 125's.

If you really like them, FINE bottom line is, its your money, your choice.... but dont kid yourself, or try kidding others that they are worth it for anything OTHER than that 'vanity', and I dont know, whatever it is that is holding you back from unlocking the door to so much 'more' biking, by taking the tests!

Take away that ONE imperative, the 'L'Plate, and WHY would 'sporty' 125's even exist? WHO, with a full licence BUYS a 'sporty' 125? They DONT... they dont make ANY sense, unless you don't have a licence... and since, at the moment, there is no legal impediment stopping any one who can hold a provisional and ride one on L's taking tests, to get more of a bike for their money.... WHY limit yourself by a self imposed limitation?

In 18 months time, there's likely to be a bit more reason, for one, if you are 17, becouse after 3rd Directive, you might not be able to have anything more than a 125, even if you take tests, becouse A2 'restricted' licence will be on a 500, DAS style, and you'll have to be 19 to do the test.... but at the moment?

There is no age restriction, or legal limitation that means you HAVE to have a 125, and so a 'sporty' one is the 'best' you can do.... only restriction is self imposed, NOT going for tests for sull licence.

Hence, sporty 125's remain, pretty much an utterly unjustifiable, 'Vanity'.... which is fair enough, if that vanity is worth it to you.... but PLEASE, cut the self delusional bullshit, that there is some more 'sensible' reason behind buying one! There isn't!

and in 12 months you wont need to pay next years insurance on a 125 ?

insurance is FAR cheaper on a full size bike with a full licence than it is with a provisional on a 125.

£2700 for a 125 is outrageous, you could buy an amazing 600 for that money, and the insurance would be cheaper aswell....
