While I would ordinarily turn to the nearest cornflakes box at the merest suggestion of needing a gasket, I need ones for my GS carburettors, and bollocks am I paying £40 for a set.

Can I just buy a sheet of gasket material for it, and is there any special type that has to be used for carbs?

:edit: - I know that it's possible to buy sheets of gasket material, it's more whether it's a special type that I want to know.

As long as it is ok for petrol it should be fine, I know it turns some grades of silicone to mush.

Hylomar blue is fuel resistant Wink

I believe it's the red version that's fuel resistant, what with having bought some recently. There's no way that I'm using instant gasket on a carb; that's asking for trouble, especially after forking out £65 quid to get them properly cleaned.

I suppose that I can go see if the local autofactors has any gasket material.

i have used normal gasket paper on a carb float bowl with no problems but it was meant to have a paper gasket if that helps

Jbweld and similar can be used to seal up carburettors.

Ptfe tape can be used in place of o-rings on idle screws and the like.

Bit less permanent, ideally. It's a rolling restoration, and I know I'm going to need to get in the carbs again at some point in its life.

Bit too 'rat' for this bike. Might give it a shot, if it comes to it. I've not encountered any overly expensive O-rings yet, though.

Does it need to be especially thick?

Cardboard is fine on carburettors. I've used it on inlet manifolds before.

/\ this, I have used filter box's before now on carbs and they have been fine once tight, you may want to re'tighten the fitting screws once its had chance to get the card wet tho (some carb gaskets for the old cars at work were getting very hard to find)
thinner is usually better unless you have lots of warpage Wink
