Only if there were no signs of mould and it still smelt ok, l only use best before dates as a rough guide.

Thinking

Hmmmmm ... Monday?

I've got a Coronation Chicken sandwich filler that says the 10th, and I'm a bit nervous about that.

Think I'll stick to sausage rolls and hash browns.

If its a Use By date I'd go a day or three beyond it. If its a Best By then no problem - I've had stuff that's years past its best.

I'd eat anything without visible mould if it didn't contain meat. What can go wrong?

I wouldn't. But that isn't anything to do with the sell-by date, and more to do with the pasta content... Exclamation

Thing is, those sort of things don't have proper hermetic seal, so I'm always a bit funny about them.

I opened a pot of fromage frais yesterday which said the 2nd of July, but it had that plastic seal under the lid. Those pre-prepared salads and sandwich filler type things really only have that labelly bit of tape.

I've eaten loads of them over the years, and sometimes (e.g. in coleslaw or potato salad), you get a kind of "fizzy" taste and you know you're pushing your luck.

Having said that, I've almost always been lucky when I've gone by smell and lack of mould (or maybe I just have more cast-iron guts than I realise Laughing )

And when it comes to cheese and bread, I tend to just cut the mould off anyway, its got to be REALLY bad before I don't attempt a mould-removal service.

I wouldn't touch it.

Not because of the age thing, but because it contains no meat and is hom food.

Thumbs Up

I had some potato salad that was 'fizzy' once, ate a fair bit while thinking, "this tastes kind of strange". It was in date but was clearly gone, I was not ill afterwards but I wouldn't eat it again like that.

A week out of date pasta I wouldn't touch, as mentioned, those pots are not properly sealed so they're much more likely to go off near the use by date than something that is air tight or vacuum packed.

The sale by date wouldn't bother me, the gay tomato pasta would though.

Unless it stinks or something is growing on it then eat away.

Use your common sense. That's what we did before use by dates.

If it smells and looks ok, chances are you'll be ok. Or die of a really bad boy food poisoning disease.

I can't see it being bad that easily. If it's sealed, then no bacteria can get in. The food will be pasteurised when potted. With the tomato sauce being acidic, not to mention the preservatives in there, I don't think bacteria will be able to grow. If it's been chilled that'll curb bacteria growth further.

So I don't think you would get ill eating it.

I eat food past the 'sell by date' all the time. Just use your nose and scrape the mould off first. Thumbs Up

They expire early to totally indemnify supermarkets against any freak early onset of bactiera or going off.

If I had a quid for every time someone talked about dumbing down of the masses I'd have a pint in my hand whenever I wanted one.

I have parmezan in my fridge that is over a year out of date, as if it isn't the leaving of the cheese for long periods of time that produces the fucking stuff lol!

I once took a swig of the woman's less than 1% milk that was in the fridge that was 2 months out of date Neutral It tasted like lemonade mixed with vinegar.

Seeing as the OP has not posted again yet, is it time to maybe consider a pasta-pot search party? Confused

What is fine for one food is not for another. Parmesan has no real way of going off in normal conditions. Leave a chicken fillet for a week or so past best and you're on very dodgy ground. Leave cooked rice for more than a day or so and you're on really, really dodgy ground. Common sense is the key, not one rule fits all, and definitely not "if it doesn't look mouldy it's fine".

I opened it it smelt alright, but it didn't taste very nice the pasta had a texture like potato so I binned it.

With food like this I take the Morrisons* approach to best before dates.

1. Whole chicken - remains in the chiller for a week or so until it reaches its best before date. If its not turned green, sticker it up with a later date.

2. If it has still not sold, bung it in the rotisserie and leave it to sweat for 3-4 days. Some mug will buy the cooked chicken to have with a salad or something.

3. If it still hasn't sold, slice up and repackage as sandwich meat/filling.

4. If it still hasn't sold after a few more days, take home and give it to the dog.

Basically, if it smells OK and hasn't turned a funny colour, its edible Wink

*I have been reliably informed that this happens on a regular basis Confused

The only thing like this I know they do like this in Tesco is with the bakery bread.

Once the unsliced bread reaches it's sell by, they slice it then re-tag it with a later date.

I always pick up a sliced loaf and ask them to Slice it there and then. Thumbs Up
