The other day I bought a helmet at Hein Gericke, it cost me £60 but it was the best fit. I told the shop assistant that was helping me choose that my budget was £100. After showing me all the helmets under £100 in my size, he then went on to some higher priced helmets at £150. He said he would do me a deal and sell it to me for £120. In the end I didn't buy it because my budget really was strictly £100, besides, it didn't fit as well.

Anyway it got me thinking, are the prices in motorbike shops 'set'? I'm after some RST Razor leather trousers but the prices are just slightly out of my budget. Yeah you know where this is going...

Hein Gericke are pretty keen to push you into buying the pricier item, I only went in there for the sake of the January sales and picked a sale helmet only for them to suggest that a more expensive £200 nolan might be better! I was only going to buy the £60 Box as it was reduced from a £100.
He didn't seem to get the fact that I was getting a sale 'bargain'
was the relevant point and assumed I had bottomless pockets.
Can't say about haggling, just try it I'd say, tell them you can't quite stretch to the asking price.

Yeah I noticed that, he saw me taking a good look at the gloves section (about 10 minutes), and when I was at the till paying for my helmet he asked me, "are you sure I can't tempt you into any gloves?". They seem pretty keen to push their stuff onto you. Next time I go in I'm going to ask them when their next sale is (I genuinely want to know) and then go on to say their Razor leather trousers are just out of my budget. Maybe it will work Thumbs Up

I shop at my local Hein Gericke, and always get deals.
My leather jacket was 170 and I've paid for it 135,00. Smile
Week later I went in for rain overall at 45, I also got stuff for my jacket to waterproof it at 6.95 and paid 41 for the hole lot. Smile
Some time later I was after gloves, I had 50 pounds on me, I've tried all HG gloves up to 50 and didn't like nothing really, then I've tried alpinestars at 60 and liked them but they were out of my budget so the fella said he will make them 50 Very Happy
Pretty much, anytime I go, he always gets me sorted Thumbs Up

A tad irrelevant, but RST Razors are awesome. I have the jacket and trousers. Went with the tractech gloves though.

Yeah I'm planning on getting some. I'm after the leather trousers, textile top, and gloves. My Hein Gericke only sell the leather trousers though =/

@Krzychu: do you have to ask for deals? or do they just freely give you them?

The local HG I used to shop at wouldn't move at all.
Interesting that the manager said that it was because he'd have to explain any discounts to HQ.

This included one case where they had a special offer on gloves, but didn't have some I wanted to have a look at in stock, though did have the ones I was intending to buy.
Was told they'd have them the following Tuesday. Came back then, had a look but went to buy the original ones anyway (think that was the situation.)
Only to find they were no longer on offer - despite me having made clear it was the offer that was prompting my interest in the first place.
He said he could come down a little (a few quid), but any more and he'd get in to 'trouble', so he'd have to clear it with HQ etc, as it was his 'fault'.
As he otherwise seemed to be an ok bloke, I let it go and just didn't buy anything... getting some much pricer ones second hand from a BCF member for the same price as it goes.

But no reason you can't haggle anywhere. Worst they can do it tell you that you have to pay the ticket price.

I only buy in HG when their deals are on. Even then, you're paying just about the right retail price. So, yes, they will be pliable but it depends on who you get in the shop. Just say that most folks on the forum have got a few quid off and you'll look like a tube if you don't. He/she will laugh and give you a deal Very Happy

If you shop at Hein Gerick you must like being ripped off, let alone asking for a 'discount' on something way overpriced in the first place.
There a lots of gear places up and down the country, do some searching.

You'd be surprised.

Many places will sell a set amount at a loss and offset it against the items sold at full price so they retain their quantity discount.

i would say they can be haggled....in most chain stores (JD, ASDA, B&Q) the checkout staff can give you a 10-20% discount no questions asked i presume at a bike shop this is the same. no when you thinnk 20% of a £200 helmet is £40 off so its just £160 now it kind of works out a big chunk off.......Also the bikes ive known lots of people to buy bikes and haggle a few exhaust, helmet, tank bags and all sorts.... it really depends on how much they value you, the person who serves you and the store.

I braught a PS3 the day they came out and asked for a discount got a free game (spider man3) a t-shirt and a keyboard that slotted onto the pad...got home wacked em all on ebay made just about £100....basically got £100 off my console.

Also helmets often come in damaged box's from shops Smile make clear its a presant and you dnt know if you want it now the box is damaged...might get offered a discount.

My step dad also braught a can, and ordered sprockets from street bike in halesowen and the woman gave me a key chain that should be £4 because i was charming :') ....so yeah you can haggle anywhere and its always worth it if you can. Thumbs Up

I haggled a top box and chain/lock when I bought my YBR. Also haggled a free pinlock, discount on gloves, boots and trousers when I bought my gear (bought all that at once). I think they gave me a can of chain lube as well. I would try - you have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Very Happy

I ask him nothing, I'm having a look around and he comes, asks whats the story, what am I after..usual.. if I really want something, I try it on and still consider and he usually goes: " listen, if You want it, I'll take ** of it "
I keep coming back to the same place for some more stuff so the fella does his best to keep me happy, so that i come back again Smile

However it is still controlled, and as you say is offset against stuff with even higher margins. IIRC helmets have one of the smallest margins. Clothing the largest.

Perhaps I should rephrase that. They wouldn't be there if they weren't making money.

How do you guys do it?

I did it like a pro in Turkey, but then that's easy, how do you possibly get people down in price in this country?

I've got the jacket and wanting the trousers but I can't bare the thought of parting with £160. How much did you get the trousers for? I doubt they'll be in a sale either with how well they seem to be selling. I've got almost all my stuff from J&S.

Without naming the different branches involved, I find haggling in Hein Gericke (and everywhere else in the world) depends mainly on the individual store/manager. One store I went to refused to even entertain the idea of discounting items, even on quite a large buy (needed the kit asap). Another I went to actively offered me discounts on items and offering to throw in freebies to try and secure a sale.

Generally, it's worth trying to haggle everywhere and anywhere in life. Worst case is that they say 'no' and you look a little stingy to a complete stranger.

Say "Is that your best price? That's still outside my budget, I'll just go buy it online," then walk towards the door.

Glasgow Hein Gericke and Hamilton J&S have both quoted me happy in the past.
