 |
|
Hi, my CBF125 is due for its first service at 600 miles and I want to put some ZX1 oil addictive in to extend the life of my engine. The instructions here - https://bit.ly/o8Yr3I, said that I should put 125ml of ZX1 in my bike. But my father that it's WAY too much for a 125cc... so I'm in need for some advice from you guys... How much ZX1 should I put in? |

Hi
Personally don't put any in.
There are a couple of different types of aftermarket oil additives. Those based on teflon, which being a solid will soon be caught by the oil filter. At best they won't block the oil filter that much.
Other type are those based on chlorinated compounds. They will have a minor positive effect for a short while. Trouble is that when heated up (such as in an engine) they react and form hydrochloric acid. As you might expect, acid is not beneficial to metal engine components.
All the best

As said by everyone else there is no need for any extra additives to be added as decent modern oils are very very good, also adding anything to it may damage the clutch (if its wet clutch like most bikes are).
Even in my highly stressed (and expensive )rally car engines I use a decent oil with no extra's and regular changes.
You will help your engine stay in good shape longer by letting it warm up before revving it hard etc than adding anything to the oil.
Just check the spec that the manual says is recommended and stick to that.

+1 for the regular oil changes, level checking/topping up and warming up. Did this regime with my old YBR (Halfords semi-synthetic 10w40, changed mostly every 2'000 miles, sometimes let it slip to 4'000) and the engine was still fantastic, even after 40'000 miles on the clock. The only work I ever did on the engine was valve clearances, checking the cam chain tensioner once because of my paranoia about hearing phantom noises, and I took the casing off to check the oil strainer for the first time at 38'000 miles - it was very clean, with just a couple of small specks of dirt on it. There was a very tiny amount of sludge in the very bottom of the casing, right in the nooks and crannies of it, you could scrape it all out with a toothpick. The clutch housing looked in good shape, no notches in the basket. Not bad at all. |

I put some Slick 50 into some old 50,000+ mile 70's/80's era cars with suspect service history back in the Day. Pouring it in while the engine was running, the reduction in clatter was immediate and dramatic.
BUT, old cars are not new bikes. If you know the service history of your bike, don't nob it up by adding anything that might cause you trouble. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thought Id share some insight on this, for when/if anyone one searches this subject as I did.
Probably sounds like a right advertising post lol, but i tried this stuff, thought mite as well try it once, if it doesnt work obviously dont buy it again. (Grasping on to anything i can for better performance"running well, lol" on my CG haha
my bike has 40,000+ miles on it, changed my oil, before summer 5w-40. But since the weather got warmer, seems like gears cant change easily as it used to, like it wasnt fully engaging, having to release clutch slightly to engage. If thats due to over heating? lighter weight oil in hot weather?, hence i was looking for sum remedy, willing to try anything.
I put this stuff in helped alot, whether thats cos it reduce friction/heat.
BUT THE MAIN DIFFERENCE i noticed was top end speed on regular roads i ride on, gave me +5mph in head wind too, esp today has been windy. And the engine just feels smoother, that could be in my head, but the physical aspects have proven it enough for me.
I find with smaller engines you can notice bigger changes if any, as you are always pushing the dam things lol.
This is my view, hopefully nothing bad will come of this. ____________________
