I reckon you want the little bit with the filter connected to the tank, big bit connected to the carb. Screw it together before connecting the hoses, of couse.

With that style of filter it probably isn't hypercritical which way it goes.

As a guess I would say you should put the cap end on the tank hose and the main body to the carburettor as it looks like it would allow larger chunks of crap to settle without obstructing the gauze.

This is correct but for a different reason. The larger screwcap goes towards the fuel tank, so that when it get's clogged up you can 1) see that it is by un-screwing the cap and 2) see that it's clean when you clean it out. You also benefit from a greater surface area.

Charming.

For the record, I'd still fit it the way round that I suggested, regardless of Pete.'s (probably better) suggestion, largely because I'd take the whole thing off, if I was intending to clean it.

Something online said about allowing the filter to clapse in on itself without creating an opening.

As for the comment you quoted, i hope you have watched the third vid, so funny and applicable to my noob confusion. Esp with the end of it being about the punch.

In other words totally joking so hope you did not take it otherwise. Thumbs Up

For the record, i'm not fitting it until someone says for absolute certainty which way it goes !! Evil or Very Mad

If it was me, I'd put the right hand part on the tank side and the left hand on the carb side.

You wont go far wrong with following Pete's advice Thumbs Up .

I also would put the RHS bit on the tank side and and filter bit on the carb side, to clean it out you just undo the cap (right hand side bit) and brush away the bits. If it was the other way round you would need to take it off and find a way to remove the filter element so you can clean behind it. The dirty side (the side that leads FROM the tank) will always be more accessible as it needs to be accessed more frequently.

TLDR - Right hand bit on the tank side and left hand bit on the carb side.

I would attach it to the most vertical part of fuel line, just because im a tart and figure gravity pulls down..

Makes no difference, fit it somewhere convenient.

Appropriate karma dispensed in this thread for filling a workshop thread with irrelevant drivel that (at best) belongs in random banter if not F&FW.

I response to the OP, I agree that the bit on the right should be nearest the tank for ease of cleaning and I also tend to keep them as near vertical as possible in case of air locks, although this is probably an irrelevance.

It won't make any difference to the actual function of the filter which way up it is though.

Incidentally, you'd have been cheaper and better with a disposable paper element filter like this:
https://levahnbros.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/fuel-filter.jpg

Although less tarty. You can see through them so you can watch the fuel flow and see any dirt or water contamination. There is also a comparatively massive surface area for filtration. This type do need to be fitted the correct way round and usually have an arrow on them.
