 |
|
My waters are telling me it's time to say fare thee well to the Hornet and move onto something more spicy.
Currently debating between Speed Triple/Sprint and GSXR750 - but thats a different thread altogether. Nonetheless a lot of adverts on autotrader are from dealers who part-exchange. Now I pretty much already guessed that they won't give me the market value for it per se, but I guess what I want to know is how much lube should I take with me before making enquiries? And in any case, is that how it's done, roll up on my bike and ask how much they'd offer for P/X?

Mileage is currently 38.5k
It's a 2000 plate.
Condition.....well there's a few problems with it, nothing major but generally dodgy electrics by whoever installed the twin headlights means the killswitch doesn't work, the revometer doesn't work (except when you turn all lights off!?!) and the backlights on the dials do work except that there's a lose connection somewhere so most of the time they are off.
Other than that it's in pretty good shape I'd say, pics would obviously help mind so might try and upload a few later but was going to save that shizzle for a "value my bike" thread...
Sure it's convienient, but only because I don't want to sell my bike then sit around waiting for a month to find one, I can handle the commute to work etc but I do things on the side outside of work which require me to be mobile right across the city of Birmingham so I would stand to lose a lot of money by sitting around waiting to find one, hence if I saw one in a dealers that ticked all the boxes I'd want to seal the deal asap.

Ugghhh, no way would I take anything resembling that price for it.
Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and hope there's decent bikes going when I eventually do sell, probably be a month or so yet at which point maybe there will be some good deals as people retire for the winter...
Looking on autotrader and eBay doesn't help though, I'm seeing good looking deals slip through my fingers

I tried just a 2000 W plate hornet in our used price/part ex.
With 38k you are looking at a "clean" price of £560 |

Hmmm I dunno, I just PX'd my CBR W plate for £1800 and that was after 2 ebay listings at 1700 and it didn't sell either time. ____________________ Journalist, student, egotist.

Looking at private I imagine about 1200-1400 at the most, seen them go for more and less, a lot of mixed prices out there for hornets. If you can get a single light on there, that was the biggest put off for me when looking. In doing so you might be able to sort out the dodgy electrics and add £100 to the asking price or so |
To be honest I'd be happy with £1200, it has a few extras like renthal bars, anodised bolts around the engine, scorpion exhaust. I still have the original single light and original bars and original exhaust. Me farting around with the electrics would do it no favours, certainly wouldn't add value! In addition it's got the front mud guard, bellypan, rear hugger, crash bungs, aftermarket mirrors, avon storm II's that still have several thousand miles on them. Got a bit of rusty wear and tear around but nothing major at all really.
I might as well put some Pics up since this looks like it's turning into a "value my bike" thread which I was going to do anyway, will put them up later.

But was £129 what the customer got on paper, or was that the SIV after write down?
If it was what they got, how much discount did they get off the new car?
Dealers only have one profit margin, so you can either have a hefty discount or a good trade in, not both; normally, if your P/X is going to be retailed, the dealer will prefer to give you a higher price for it, because they pay VAT on the profit margin, so the nearer they give you to retail price, the less VAT they have to pay.
Using your later example of a £2000 mark up, let's see where that goes:
£400 VAT
£100 Warranty
£2-500 Service and rectification
£100 Salesman's commision
Some dealerships will also levy a house charge on every deal, which goes into a slush fund to cover out of pocket expenses; that could be £1-150.
So now we're down to £750-1100 and that's before the next guy wants £1000 more than his P/X is worth.
The last dealership I worked at (as used car sales manager) £2000 wouldn't have been enough mark up, because of the cost of rectification work and the standard of preparation we had to comply with.
Admittedly, cars are generally worth more than bikes, but the principles are the same. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I'm nothing to do with the sales, I just listen in.
They offered the guy £129 for his Matiz and he paid the remainder of his deposit towards PCP on a new Mazda 6 |

At our dealership we seem to give good prices on part ex's. ( more than i would offer the customer anyway!)
We also make money out of it. ____________________ Suzuki GT250 x7------- Fazer 600------CB250RS------Aprilia Rally 70----- Bandit 600

Well, I just did a quick google and the first two results gave me Mazda dealers offering a £1000 discount and a £1000 deposit contribution, if you buy using PCP, so there's two grand straight out of the margin, before anyone has even asked for it.
I imagine they gave trade price for the Matiz and they will hope to make a couple of hundred quid back at auction, or more likely, the hope is they won't lose anything. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........
