18V sounds very dodgy. Normal lead acid battery you will get 2V per cell, and there should only be 6 cells.
While the rr might take the voltage I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it were damaged by it. However I would also not be at all surprised if any other electrical components were damaged by that voltage (ie, cdi unit, power valve control unit, rev counter, etc).
If the voltage is already all over the place when the engine is running then I wouldn't be surprised if the rr is already dead.

Hmmm? if that was my battery chucking out 18v through my bikes 12v system, I`d take it off straight away befor all my wires and little black boxes got cooked!
But hey that`s just me  ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

hey all,
thanks for the input,
the little bike seems to be handling it pretty well to be honest, no bulbs blown, power valve working as it should do...
I pulled off the alternator side of the engine to swap the stator and found water in there
Turns out there is a little part missing from the starter that covers the hole where the + cable goes in, this had let water in (thrown up from the front wheel), flooded the starter and one side of the engine...
All the waters out, starter has been cleaned thoroughly as well as that side of the engine and the stator swapped.
Just need to swap the reg and put the new battery in. I opted to put a new one on and try aviod blowing it again
If this reg goes again i have no idea where to look as there isnt much between the stator coils and the reg and I will check the earth on the reg this time...
Darn late 1990's hondas and there reg blowing habbits

This 18 volts from a battery with nothing running has bugged me so I'm not being sarcastic here but do you know how to use your multimeter correctly??
Reason I ask is you should be checking with it set to DC volts, (usually a 20v setting on the meter). I've just checked a shagged battery in the garage that was only showing 9.8v DC, switching to AC volts it then gives a reading of 20.2v AC , sticking the charger on it so 13.8v DC is running into it then shows 29.6v AC.
This would explain your weird 18v reading, the only time you should really be using the AC setting is the stator/alternator output BEFORE it goes into the reg/rec.
If you do know what you're doing then forgive and ignore me but use another multimeter to make sure yours isn't knackered  ____________________ I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite so sure. |

heh,
Yeah I have half a clue when it comes to the basics with these
I threw in another reg, stator, battery and ignition di-hicky (next to the stator) and the new battery is charging at a more reasonable 13.5v throughout the engine rev range so all is back to normal.
I will certainly keep an eye on this though, am thinking of puting a voltage meter display on the clocks out of paranoia...
