hi,
im gonna get masel comfy for this..................
be prepared for conflicting/vastly differing opinions on this.
i've always stuck to the same routine after changing the piston &/or rings on my 2t's : varying the revs as much as possible for first few hundred miles..... not redlining it. steadily increasing the max revs. ie sticking to 5000rpm for a bit... then 6000, then 7k, etc.
depending on the type of piston used, using decent 2t, etc etc.
im not going to bother with specifics, simply because what works for me, i can guaruntee umpteen other folk will say im doing it wrong, lol.
but never had any issues after any top end work I'VE done ("running in" related anyway").
but if you want specifics, i'll elaborate, lif you do,lol. (who done what work, make of piston, bottom end flushed?, reason for re-build etc etc)
good luck,

cheers,
GAZ

There's so many differing views on this and nobody can really say which is best. Just to be different I tried the 'hard' run in on my NSR that I rebuilt a couple of months ago.

1.Start engine and run till it's up to temperature - \Check for leaks etc.
2.Start engine and run up to temperature then take bike out on the road keeping below 6000 rpm.
3. Find a long straight bit of road then put it in 3rd gear and run it from rolling pace up to the redline. When you reach the redline let go of the throttle and let the engine run back down to walking pace.
4.Do this 6 times with cooling (slow riding) time in between and your done.

Compression tested the engine after trying this technique and it read 140 PSI which I was impressed with given the quickness of the procedure.

Obviously using this procedure I made sure that I had top grade synthetic oil and had warmed the engine up fully as the potential for disaster is ever present Twisted Evil

Hi

I would agree with stirlinggaz' method.

All the best

I would normally, but after speaking to a couple of MX friends who swear by the hard break in method i thought i'd try it and was impressed.

But after how many hours use are their MX bikes rebuilt?

All the best
