So I was taking the missus into work today. She works in a building with a car park adjacent to a very steep hill (1/5 gradient or something crazy like that). It's not too difficult on a bike but with the added weight and instability of a pillion, you need some pretty good balancing skills.

I launched up the hill ready to turn into the car park and was greeted by two very slow moving pedestrians - in the middle of the road. I couldn't judge which direction they were going to go so I had to swerve the bike around them and take the corner even more tighter than normal. Big mistake. I lost balance and me, missus and bike fell over to the left.

I've dropped the bike before and it's not a real big issue. The worst thing was the bastard twatting pedestrians who had caused the issue just walked off - I had a woman on the back of the bike ffs!

I was pretty pumped full of adrenaline then and a bit shaky, struggling to pick the bike back up and luckily there was a couple of builders nearby who helped pick it up.

Damage: Nothing major (I hope). The gear stick 'nob' that protrudes has snapped off but I can somehow still change gear (good rubber grip on the soles of my boots). The mirrors are bent and twisted to fuck. My windshield is scratched up quite a bit but you can't really tell for all the dead flies Laughing And the worst is I've somehow managed to smash the perspex screen which covers my LCD panel. This is the bit I'm really concerned about as I really don't want to shell out on a new instrument panel for the sake of one smashed cover. Anyone know these if these are replaceable? (see attachment)

Other than that, nothing serious. I burnt my leg on the engine casing and it's gonna blister Sad Was really more concerned about the missus as it's the second time she's gone over with the bike but luckily the mirrors and top box absorbed most of the impact and she's fine - really don't want to put her off riding pillion as she really enjoys it!

After cooling off a bit I decided to take the bike back home to avoid any rain getting on the LCD panel and come back to work in one of the cages. On my way back home not far from when the bike fwell, I saw the two bastards standing in a bus stop. I slowed to a crawl, revving the tits off the bike (baffle's out Twisted Evil ) and saw them looking extremely anxious - I pointed to them and made the 'throat slit' sign - there were about 15 other people at the bus stop all looking at them. The look on their faces more than made up for what happened earlier Very Happy

TBH mate all I'm reading there is you couldn't control the bike? Why didn't you stop or slow right down?

I'm not blaming them 100% - but they shouldn't have been walking in the road - they could have at least got onto the pavement when I approached them but they made no effort to move. As I said, it's a nasty steep hill and with the added weight, makes the bike a lot more difficult to control. At low speed. Up a hill. Whilst cornering. And avoiding twatting pedestrains Evil or Very Mad Also, the way the road cambers and how it changes when you approach the car park makes it even worse. The only safe spot to be on a bike is dead centre as the angle of the camber of both sides means I can't put both feet down if I'm not in the centre.

I hate to say it mate, but it's poor observation. You should have seen the people crossing the road and slowed down. If it was a blind corner you should have been taking it slow enough to brake safely.

+1, I've never had the issue of balance with a pillion, true its heavier, but ive had 18 stone on the back and been doing less than 5mph creeping through traffic no issue.

Pedestrians have more right of way than yourself I think?

As above why didnt you just stop ?

Dont mean to be a cunt but should you really be taking pillions if your not in full control of the bike at slow speed ?

As much as I disagree (one of the few Laws the Americans have got right), pedestrians in this country have right of way. Its utterly stupid and typically english backwards thinking.

next time, leg out, ride past clipping them Laughing

They clearly had no idea you were there, why not honk your horn and slow down?

They knew I was there. I was going so slow I was on the verge of stopping (but as explained, I couldn't stop as I couldn't put both feet down). They saw me and made no attempt to get off the middle of the road or even out of my way. A pavement was there but they chose to casually stroll down the middle of the road ignoring me, my indicator light and my look of scorn. They weren't just crossing the road but using it instead of the pavement. I agree I could have handled the bike better - it's easy to consider these things on reflection.

Anyway, what I'm really after is advice on the smashed perspex lens/screen on my instrument panel. Any ideas on getting hold of one?

Why do you need to put both feet down to stop? I would re-evaluate if you should be taking pillions TBH.

Don't be too shocked if you receive a visit from Plod. I know that it's a bit shit but you could probably be charged with threatening behaviour for making such a gesture.

Please all don't judge my riding skills or ability to ride with a pillion based on this mishap.

On a flat road, single foot is fine. On a steep hill not so easy. We're not light people by any means (combined weight of about 35st) so I'd need both feet to prevent to swaying/tipping the bike while I control the bike at a speed below it's natural 'balancing' speed if you know what I mean.

Tempting after the feedback I've had today, but I'd have to fork out an extra grand.

Hi

Looks like it is available as a separate parts. Can't find a UK fiche for the SV, but on a random US one (K3/K4) it is shown as part number 34150-16G30 for $92.

All the best

Keith

Thanks a lot mate. Tis a bit steep for a lump of plastic. I'd trawl fleabay and see if someones got a whole unit going cheap but don't have access at work. Do you know if it would still be watertight after having it replaced?

Your a big guy on an SV and you can't hold it up on one leg with a with a pillion on a hill?

There is every something very wrong with your body or very wrong with your technique. Confused

Very short legs Chris. Considering stabilisers.
