....when I start riding again after an 8-year gap?

Will it all come back naturally? Obviously I will need to take it easy to start with.

My history is only 3 years of daily riding but covered approx 30,000 miles a year (commuting, ride-outs and track days).

Thanks.

If I had a pound for every time someone has said that to me since I decided to go back to bikes I'd have enough to buy a KFC 3 piece variety meal Very Happy

Everyone thought they had come up with that joke and think it's the funniest thing ever.

You'll be fine, just go out when it's quiet to begin with to get your confidence back.

I had a ten year gap and when i got back on a bike i just took my time and went out somewhere where i knew it would be quiet, to get my brain back into bike mode. But to be honest you never really forget. It soon comes back.

Thanks for your views. Ok, will just take it steady Mr. Green

Just need to identify a suitable steed now. Latest thinking is Hornet but am concerned about the tank range - I will be commuting 90 miles a day.

Sounds like my own story.

Had a break of about eight years myself.
Then got back into bikes as I needed to commute
through the traffic.

Bought an ER500 and had it for 5 years.
Totally bullet proof, cheap and reliable, would
recommend as a commuter tool Thumbs Up

Don't commute any more, ride more for
pleasure now so bought a bandit 600.

Wouldn't be without it now Very Happy

What can you expect?

Well... the number of people trying to kill you has tripled and the roads are in terrible condition.

Other than that you will be fine Very Happy

I can get about that with a tenners worth of fuel, well depending on my riding. Had hit 93 miles before I filled up the other day, with a full tank it is easily do-able. Also I guess it depends on what model you are looking at? I believe the pre 2005 had a 16 litre tank post is a 17 I believe.

ER5 - I find them far too small for my liking Confused

Hornet - am looking at the more recent models (2010) but still find the idea of a 17l tank annoying. Some of us like a larger tank between the legs Rolling Eyes

I have pretty much made up my mind - think I will go for a CB1300 and hustle the couriers on that!

Just need to save up some cash now.......

You will be filling up every day no matter what bike you have (I'm doing similar daily mileage). You need your daily commute range plus say another 30 or 40 miles comfort zone to allow for the day they close a road on you and you have to ride a long way round to get home/to work.

I have found a favourite petrol station that isn't too expensive, doesn't make me take my lid off, thus losing the weather seal in the colder months and recognise my bike so authorise the pump as I'm putting the side stand down. All this saves me time on the journey to work in the morning. Also, unlike some of the scummy petrol stations near work, I don't think the cashier is stealing my card details!!

EFA. Not making a big deal of it, just a gentle reminder that biking isn't (yet) solely the preserve of 600cc+ machines.
