Brake Discs - Do I needs new ones?

Hi All,

Bought a new bike today which needs doing up, has been stored for a while and neglected.

Got it back to my mates farm and whilst looking round it, we noticed the 2 front discs are covered in either brake fluid / oil?

Its very slimy, light black / clear / silverly looking liquid.

Just wandered if these are no good now? Or if we would be able to clean them up at all?

The slimy black stuff may have been deliberately applied to the discs in order to protect them from corrosion during storage. Clean the stuff off and give them a close inspection before running out and needlessly purchasing replacements. It is highly likely though that the brake pads will have been contaminated with this slime and will probably need replacing. It's also possible that oil leaking from the forks or brake fluid leaking from the calipers may have caused this.

If you mean the pads, they will be knackered, they don't like oily substances on them. They are relatively cheap and not a thing you want in a defective state. Play it safe and replace them. The disks as mentioned will just want cleaning off (I'd start with petrol then hot soapy water then rinse with clean water and dry them off .

Sorry, I apologise, I was referencing to the discs, we will stick new pads in the cat, just concerned as the discs will be an expense we could do without!

We'll try giving the discs a clean tomorrow.

I usually just wipe them down, wash them then ride as normal. This moves what's left of the contaminants on to the brake pads, which at some point i usually take out and set on fire. The fact i'm still alive means this can't be totally idiotic Laughing

The pads are absorbent and will never clean up but the disks being steel aren't so whatever is on them can be cleaned away to leave them fresh using a suitable solvent or detergent.
