Try buying a new one Thumbs Up

If it's not too bad just try knocking out as much dust as you can.

Most fuel filters can't be cleaned, just replace it. But for a loss of 30 mph, unless it was very gradual, I'd be looking elsewhere for a problem.

After sorting it you'd better think about getting an in-line one as well Thumbs Up
Try checking/cleaning carbs as well - oh and try the workshop section - maybe someone else has sorted same problem.

If it's a sudden thing (drop to 70 and fuel filter crappy) then change the filter, and get your carbs cleaned out (drain the bowls, blow out the jets).

Have you recently run out of fuel, or let the tank get way low? Or maybe the garage you get fuel from lets their tanks run low? These are great ways to get the crap at the bottom of the tank into your carbs.

Maybe the garage recently had a delivery of petrol? This stirs up all the crap at the bottom of their tanks - should wait a few days for the sediment to settle before using a garage if you see petrol being delivered.

So, you had 3 years of sediment build up in your tank for your carbs to suck on Smile I'd be tempted to flush the tank, too. No point in clearing the carbs and putting a new filter on if the crap is still there.

It would have just clogged the filter, thats what its there for.

30mph is a serious drop off in speed however!
Change the filter and see how it runs, i expect changing the filter to help, but i wouldnt be supprised if there were other things contributing to your dropoff in speed.

if there could be ultiple causes to a problem, allways fix the cheapest one first Wink

Ahhh, interesting. I was recently riding to work, when I noticed too late I was almost out of petrol. Just before I pulled into the car park, the bike (ok - the scooter!) started to jerk and generally mess around. Pretty much the same thing happened on the way home, even after having filled up, although when I took it out in the evening, it improved somewhat. It's much better now, but the performance is not what it was, and there is a definite lack of power or certainty to the engine, expecially at lower speeds/gears. Would you say that I was suffering from a similar problem? And how major a job is it for a garage to sort it out?
