Unmarked Volvo flashes his lights, I pull over, he gets out of the car walks up to me and starts the conversation with 'alright boss' Laughing Obviously thinking i'm going to be some little chavvy scum teenager.

So I take my helmet off, shake my hair Loreal - because im worth it stylie and reply with 'Yes officer, Im fine thank you'. Laughing Laughing

Anywho he was a bit shocked that I had boobs, but was very nice about the fact my number plate is illegal and said 'I think we can forget about it this time', no fine, no defect slip thingy - lovely jubbly!! Cool

The bit I was surprised about was when he asked me if I had contact lenses in..... I sort of looked at him a bit dumb and said yes (as I was indeed wearing them). I asked him why he asked me that and he said it is marked on my licence that I need glasses or contact lenses to drive, he said he would have given me sight test if I didn't have the lenses in.

Has anyone else been asked this before? I was quite shocked as I didn't realise that the DVLA actually mark it on your licence if you need glasses.

Also if I get tugged again by them, will they have it on record that I was warned about the number plate seeing as I wasn't fined or given a defect thingy? Or should I learn my lesson and change the plate? Its not excessively small and is easily read at a distance, but it is a 1 liner Shocked

Blah blah cool story bro Mr. Green

You'll keep getting tugged for that tbh.

In my experience, the plod will let a smaller two liner go through with a bit of a tut and a sharp inhale of breath. If you dont look and ride like a complete spazmo they'll probably let you off.

Letter box registrations though are something they look at altogether differently, especially on a bike under 10 years old.

in the Codes bit of your licence you'll probably have a 01 which means you need to wear glasses

Amusingly, everything but my bike part of license has 01 next to it.. for some reason they seem to think I don't need to wear glasses for my bike.

My bike is over 10 years old, are the number plate laws not different on bikes pre 2001?

EDIT: When I had the bigger 2 line reg plate on it before, my exhaust used to melt the corner of it

1 liner plates are daft, no matter how big they are they are illegal and you will continue to get hassled for it.

I'm not really taken by the obsession with tiny number plates but if you must have a small plate then at least have a two line plate so there can be at least some doubt in the passing plod's limited mind.

Yes, but not that much. You can have either a 2 or 3 line plate, with slightly different letter sizes (still big) and there is no requirement for a BS stamp or manufacturers postcode.

Your plate has always been illegal.

I see! Thanks for clearing that up for me. I think I might just get the 2 liner, but not too big.

I've got a two liner smaller plate but got the font made slightly larger, I've had no problems with plod or mot (touch wood and all that), but I don't tend to ride with my brain unplugged Embarassed (well not very often Evil or Very Mad ).

The legal requirements only actually refer to the font and the spacing, if you stick to the legal requirements of font size and style, gaps between characters and margin size some registration numbers (i.e. those containing several 1s or with fewer digits) can have a very small plate and still be legal.

The whole 9x7 is legal whereas 7x5 etc etc is not is a load of old balls.

From:

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_181503

Motorcycle number plates should have:

character height - 64 millimetres
character width - 44 millimetres (except the figure 1 or letter I)
character stroke - 10 millimetres
space between characters - 10 millimetres
space between groups - 30 millimetres
top, bottom and side margins - 11 millimetres (minimum)
vertical space between groups - 13 millimetres

Assuming you have no I or 1 in your reg mark your (legal) plate can be :

44x3 + 2x10 + 2x11 = 17.4cm (6.9 inch) wide

64x2 + 13 + 2x11 = 16.3cm (6.4 inch ) tall

Not exactly massive Thumbs Up .

There's no specific law I'm aware of pre 2001, I was just making the point that in my experience, the law are more accomodating if your mods are within keeping with the "era" of the bike. Letterbox's are more of a 90's mod, so bikes of a later registration are much more likely to get pulled up.

I presume you get this if you took your test wearing glasses?

Amazed that so many blokes have come in here, but none of them have touched your boobs yet.

TBH, your plate is asking for a tug. £7 or so from eBay for a legal one is surely better than a £60 FPN: it's not like you even see it when you're riding.

Yes, that plate is asking for a tug. You would likely be much better off having a plate that is the proper shape just scaled down a little bit. They tend to pull plates like that less as they are the right shape with the right font etc.

Also, yes, as said earlier in the thread if you look at your licence in the "Codes" section on the reverse it will have "01" which denotes that if you are in control of a motor vehicle you MUST have a vision aid such as glasses or contact lenses to help you see.

You have the '01' code on your licence if you ticked the box on your licence application form that says something along the lines of you need to wear corrective lenses for your vision.

Thumbs Up!

Your tits got you off a fine, change the plate. You were lucky.

As for the contacts, I was warned by a cop about my glasses on my license but he said if I'm wearing contacts it's fine.

Sorry, not correct. The software can read two lines as it is shape recognition of the individual characters not the shape of the overall plate

Fair, must have been a while ago when the technology was new.
