I'm just stripping down a 1978 B120 and the ball bearings and races in the steering head are totally shot. Anyone know what a direct replacement bearing sizes would be.

I've looked at some of the parts dealers and they want daft money for them but dont give sizes and I figure I can shoot down to my local bearing factors and get them at a considerable saving.

Ta in advance!

Paul

All you can do is remove the bearings and take a trip to the bearing factors. Standard ball bearings are not suitable, you need proper headrace bearings either taper roller or ball type.

if i remember rightly, they dont have a tapered head race, but inner and outer races with ball bearings
you might get away witha roller bottom 30X55X17 and top 25X47X15

your best bet is to see if you can pck the existing ones with a pant load of grease and then tighten it back up, or pull them out and see if my measurements are right and get some from your local bearing guy,

don't talke my measurements as gospel!!!!

Tapered race are usually replacement. You could use regular bearings, if you could find them in angular contact format, which are designed for axial loads.

Thanks Pete.

Do they make "proper" headrace bearings? I always thought that they were just the bog standard sizes that existed in industry anyway.

All the bikes I've replaced steering head bearings on I've used tapered rollers, as they are designed for thrust and radial loads, none of them have been specialist bearings, just stuff I've got from the bearing factors, SKF, Koyo and the like. I just assumed that because they are designed to withstand the forces and stresses found in industrial machinery or automotive use, that they would be OK for the steering head on a bike.

It would be nice to actually have the bearings size to hand rather than having to take the old bearing into the shop.

I'm going by the sizes hmmnz posted but what you could do is remove the ones you have, measure the stem, headstock and thickness for each and put the sizes into google.

Eventually got the bearings for this and turns out they are as follows

Top bearing is a 324505 25x45x14

Bottom bearing is a 324805 27x48x14

Thanks for the help and advice Pete and hmmnz

Same as a GN125
