Hi all was watching a video about this today and I can't get my head round it. If I want to go round a right hand bend, push the left side of the bar? So when you are going round it what do you do next........ Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

It probably happes naturally when you ride anyway, but as the bike comes out of the bend you just need to push slightly the other way and it will all come back into line.

The best thing to do... go and find a nice quiet road with some bends and TRY IT.

You'll soon see what it does and how it works.

No no no!!! Shocked
To go right, you push the right side of the bar away from you, this makes your weight go forward and to the right, therefore leaning the bike to the right.
When you've got round the bend gently just gently move your weight back to a neutral position and you're back in a straight line!

Does that help?

Interesting experiment to try is to find a big open space. Maybe an empty carpark. Come to a stop, then pull away while turning the bars slightly to the right for example. You'll continue to to turn right untill you reach a certain speed, then the bike will start to turn the other way all of a sudden. I usually have a play with it when turning out of a junction. You'll see it happen right before you.

When you're riding in a straight line, gently push the handle bars left or right momentarily. You will feel the bike want to lean in the opposite direction. You must be going quicker than about 15mph for this to work, otherwise you stay straight up and turn in a circle like a push bike! Mr. Green

Countersteering comes instinctively when you pull a fast sweeping bend... You don't know that you're doing it but you are... there's a nice sweeping left hander which drops in elevation at the end of my road and that's when i notice countersteering in action as I AM NOT turning the handlebars to the left... but oddly to the right, bike is leant to the left. Don't try to MAKE yourself do it as FAZED said since it could be nasty. Nearly had a spill on my ped doing it. BTW, correct me if i'm wrong but a good example of counter steer might be found in speedway racing Question Rolling Eyes

I practice it. Not in a few weeks though. I will again. . .

Works well for dodging cars in emergencies, becuase you can dodge quickely out of the way. Make sure you are practicing in the dry though.

Good for tipping the bike hard into turns.

Good for fast change of direction at high speeds.

Good for smooth cornering

You will doing it naturally, but if you gently try it, and practice you will realise how it imporves your cornering.

You can also use it to adjust your line on roundabouts for example. As it can dip the bike in further quicky.

If you practice it, it becomes in-built into your brain and when you do need it you can utilise it, it is second nature.

E.g. When that car pulled out on me i had to use it for the first time, i didnt even think about it, it just happened and i avoided the car. Smile

you are wrong Laughing

the act of countersteering tips the bike over to a lean angle where camber thrust will make it turn

although speedway riders are technically "countersteering", they are actually steering out of a skidding rear wheel which is a different kettle of fish entirely

ride along at about 50 in a dead straight line, gently push one of your handles forwards ! be amazed at strange results !

Don't try and always think about counter steering, I tried riding like that and spent a couple of weeks going very slowly and generally riding like a plonker Confused

have a look at this picture..... if you look closely you can see how far "the wrong way" the front wheel is pointing !

The best way I've been explained it is: Push left, lean left, go left.

They actually mention this on our test and if you don't know it, that's already 1 down out of the 4 you're allowed to miss. I'd have never survived my first ride had I not known this.

I read about it in Bike and had a try. I couldn't understand it at first but I went to a few corners and roundabouts and tried it out. It is good for tipping you into a corner harder and if you are running wide, push the bars a bit more and it will tighten up your line. It's confusing at first but eventually you get the hang of it and it proves very useful.

The only way to know what it is is to try it. I couldn't get my head round it either until I tried it out - and found it had much more of an effect than I expected! So if you're going to experiment just don't use too much force, it doesn't make much at all to move the bike Smile

I almost exclusively used it. It is a very agressive way to ride but helps you get the utmost handling from your bike. Claud that is normal, if theres space you dodge cars, if there isnt you try and headbutt the front of a car, but you still always tend to try. I cant understand people who T-bone cars completely striaght on, surely some avoiding action must of occurred.

Anyhew it is very useful, helps you corner faster, dodge faster, and generally ride more agressively. For a Right handed, push the right hand side away from you gently, harder you push the faster you corner. So no throwing the bar away from you please, or youll be getting intimate with firstly a hedge and then the AA.

I found my 900R front end to be particularly heavy and reluctant to steer when I first started riding. Positive counter steering helped enormously and I now find it's natural/ second nature.

The only other times I find I have to posistviely think about countersteering is when I've cocked up a bend or turn and find I'm not going round it tight enough and simply use a countersteer input to quickly modify the line.

Does countersteering only relate to heavier 'bikes? I wouldn't have thought about it on my old Suzi GP100 as man-handling the bars was more than enough?

you simply can't ride any bike without counter steering at any speed above trotting pace

try it

at 40mph on a straight road take your hands off the bars and try to steer the bike

it takes massive weight shifts to make it lean and it is VERY slow to react

and it gets tougher the faster you go

the only way to lean (steer) a bike is to counter steer, you just don't know you are doing it, and yes it works on push bikes if you can go fast enough Wink

Note: It does not have to be an aggressive style at all. It does help to smoothen out cornering when applied with moderation. I know Ricardo will have to use it, if he rides fast.

You do do it anyway, but if you try it you will be emphasising the normal actions used to move the bike.

Try and you will see. Its hard to explain exactly how you can use it . See for yourself. As soon as you move the bars gently the bike will move. You only need slight movements.

I practiced in a straight with no cars around. After i progressed to using it to tip the bike around bends. Thumbs Up

You can always use it to stand the bike up again, when its lent over. All this will fall into place, when you try it.

A picture tells a thousand words.

This is a right hander!

You should be able to work out which bar end to push from that. (don't try to do what he is doing unless you have a foot of suspension on both ends and balls of steel, I used that as an extreme example to demonstrate the technique.)

I think that is the same as speedway

he isn't using countersteering in the conventional sense in that pic, he is using it to stop the sliding rear from overtaking the front

countersteering on the road is used to initiate the turn, not to maintain it - if you keep pushing then you will keep leaning until you run out of grip or your bar end touches down

countersteering does not have to be aggressive.
The harder you push the handlebar the faster the bike will lean,so if you push the handlebar gently the bike will lean slower.
The only way to practice this is to very gently do it in a straightline to get a feel to how quickly countersteering works then apply what you learn on a set of corners or a roundabout you know.

I am still confused to be honest about it. When I am in a straight line and lets say I want to go right, so I push the left bar and it goes left? Am I not pushing it far enough? Confused
