Hi guys
I'm after a new rear tyre for the CBR and ultimately I'm after value for money, so I'll buy a pair if it works out much better, but I have a small dilemma.
The current back tyre is a BT023 which despite riding like a mad man most days has still seen as near as makes no difference 10,000 miles and bearing in mind the back is near bald down the middle, I full throttled it yesterday in the pouring rain and it still tried to lift the front (i.e. no spinning at all). I love the BT023's So it would seem to be a simple choice, but my problem is that fitted to the bike the BT023's cost me £245 for the pair, probably more if I buy them separately.
A pair of Maxxis tyres will cost me around £160 fitted to the bike, price wise there is very little difference between the sports and the touring tyres. A saving of £100 might not sound like much, but I live life on a budget so every little helps!
So...
If I go for maxxis touring tyres and try and match the longetivity of the BT023's, will I miss the out right grip the BT023's offer, and could the cheaper maxxis really match the 10,000 miles I've seen from the 023's.
Or if I go for the sports tyres to try and match the grip, will I miss the longetivity the BT023's offer? Surely a proper sports tyre will struggle to do half the miles the BT023 has?
Or am I being an idiot and not realising that I have the perfect value for money already and suck up the extra £100 as necessary.
Sorry if that rambled on a bit!
Thanks

Currently got Maxxis tyres on the Bandit - and previously had Bridgestones fitted. Maxxis Sport Touring on the front (for longevity), and Maxxis Supersport on the back (for grip).
I ride in all weathers, and as mentioned, they can sometimes be a bit sketchy (but still predictable) in the wet. They've been FANTASTIC in the dry, and IMHO definately worth having another pair. I'm actually looking to get the rear replaced after a full spring and summer of daily riding on it.
They sometimes come in for criticism because some had a reputation of poor grip, but I can hjonestly say I haven't found this to be the case. I'd have no hesitation to recommend them, or to use them again on the bike. ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

I very much doubt you'll see 10k miles off a set of Maxxis, so you'll end up replacing them before you would the BT023 anyway.
Last the BT023 rear I got fitted cost me £120 to the bike including a £15 fitting fee, so the tyre was not very expensive at all.
Tbh, I'd pay the extra and go for them, I love the tyres too and coming from road attacks I can strongly say I much prefered the 023. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

They ride fine in the dry and warm up quick enough. I rode a 650 Bandit on a set of Supersports. Was able to keep up the (rather brisk) pace of the group on them. ( had to throw the brute into corners and hang off it like a monkey to get it to hold a line though!)
Im tempted to say that id prefer them over bridgestones.....
Even a set of Supercorsas will grip enough in the wet to get the front to lift. ____________________ Suzuki GT250 x7------- Fazer 600------CB250RS------Aprilia Rally 70----- Bandit 600

Don't worry I'm not either. The 021 were just as shitee.
023 is in a completely different league though. Ticks all the boxes IMHO. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Which Maxxis are you looking at? I've ridden a few bikes with the Supermaxx fitted. Wet grip was poor, but the most annoying thing in my opinion was the extremely flat profile which makes the handling sluggish and really limits stability and grip when leant over.
If you want something cheaper than the Bridgestone, Pirelli Diablo Stradas are pretty impressive for a touring tyre, and can be had for a fair bit less than the Bridgestone as they've recently been superseded by the Angel ST.
For example: 180 & 120 pair

Hi.. I also have a CBR600 & last year I put a pair of 023`s on it.. I ride really hard & this is for sure the best ever set of tyres I`ve had!! my rear normally lasts around 1000 miles.. this 023 has now done 1,600 miles & still has loads left.. normally by 1000 miles the canvass is showing & the rubber on the edges is chewed up like a track tyre!! this 023 has stood the true test of time with me riding the bike.. I would not rate the Maxxis against the 23`s, a friend had maxxi`s on his 600RR & said they were terrible in both the dry & wet!! & scrubbed fairly fast too!! hope this helps.. have a nice day now.. |
