PostPosted: 21:23 - 29 Aug 2011    Post subject: Line on tyres? Reply with quote

Recently I've noticed a line appear on the front tyre, and have no idea what's caused it. It looks like there could be something stuck between the tyre and the mudguard, but there isn't, I've checked. I thought it would disappear after a while, but a few weeks later, it's still there, and I've noticed the same line appear on the rear tyre too now. The tyres themselves are both Pilot Road 2s and I regularly check my pressures with an accurate gauge.

Bit worried that it might be the tyre seam starting to stretch or something, but as it's not at all central I don't think that's it either.

Anyone have an idea what they might be, and should I be concerned?

Don't forget that tyres grow with centrifugal force (but I am sure that this is common knowledge so excuse me to those that do already know) and might be rubbing on something which is not that evident at a standstill.

No chance you mudguard is flexing when on the road and hitting the tyre.

Whilst the Pilot Road 2's use Michelins 2CT (two compound technology) they are not called the "Pilot Road 2CT", merely "Pilot Road 2". But yeah, same shit. https://www.michelin.co.uk/motorcycles/michelin-pilot-road-2

Cheers, all. Well, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one! But still nobody seems to know what's causing it. Think I'll mail Michelin and see what they say, and then come back and let you lot know... watch this space....!

Just got a reply from Michelin.

Quote:

We would advise that it could be the “Anti Static Strip” explained as follows:-

When a Motorcycle is in use there is a build up of static within the machine. It is necessary to ensure that this is dispersed during usage. In order to facilitate this, there is a carbon black strip built into the tyre during manufacture. This strip is moulded into the tyre before curing using carbon as this is a good conductor of static electricity. This strip is practically invisible on a new tyre, but can appear as the tyre wears, especially if the usage of the motorcycle is not high. There is no detrimental effect on the performance of the tyre either before, during or after this strip has become apparent. The positioning of this strip is slightly “off centre” and all around the circumference of the tyre.

Ah, you beat me to it, just got here to post the same thing! They were even kind enough to call as well, which is pretty good customer service really. Glad it turns out there's nothing to worry about, because they are terribly good tyres and I would have been reluctant to have to think about changing them.

So, that's that mystery cleared up... next week; Why did Suzuki choose to use mild steel for one piece of an otherwise entirely stainless steel exhaust system...??

Thumbs Up Very Happy

Lol, which part?

I bought some stainless headers for my bike on ebay... The bracket that mounts under the engine is mild steel, as are the flanges that attach to the cylinder head. Fooking shite... Will spend a bit more next time and get a decent set of pipes from Motad.
