Best for what!?...from what I have read/heard the Mito and RS is faster than the NSR in all respects, but the NSR is more reliable (Do I hear an echo?...echo...?) etc...blah blah...

...but the Mito has 7 gears, which is apparently quite difficult to handle...also, I've seen far more second hand Aprilias in the showrooms than NSRs, which must mean something...?

it ultimately boils down to your situation...have you passed your test?...etc...

Hi

Owning an RS and a Cagiva Freccia (one before the Mito, with the same 7 speed engine), it is difficult to say. The Aprilia has the far better engine (and it is fairly reliable). The Cagiva is far better looking. Cagiva bodywork is VERY strong, and is probably the best quality bike bodywork I have seen (far better than Honda or Aprilia stuff). The Cagiva is normally marginally quicker in road tests, but the Aprilia would pull higher gearing to go quicker again. Aprilia has the better gearbox and clutch, Cagiva has better brakes (but the Aprilia brakes only really need better pads to be as good). Aprilia electrics are maybe marginally better than Cagiva, but neither are bad. The Cagiva comes with better tyres than the Aprilia

Oh, and the Mito no longer has a 7 speed box (I think) and is also not as quick as it used to be.

So, for me it is a draw. Go for whichever one feels best to you. That is my excuse for not voting!

All the best

Keith

The mito is much better looking, the rs is very ugly. I would say the mito, but they are both unreliable

Difficult question to answer if your looking at reliability issues etc. Saw a new mito in a showroom for £3300 the other day. The frame finish looks good, as do the brakes and forks, but the details let it down, sidestand looks very rough cast, and the rear sets were not brilliant either. The plastics looked ok though, but i dont know how well it crashes. I reckon its by far the best looking 125, (apart from the Gilera GFR)and im another one who does not like the lastest bulbous looking RS125, the older RS125 Extrema was far nicer! For quality the NSR has both beaten, and its the finish and details that you notice, like the rubber covered rider and pillion pegs, etc. I have heard about many RS125s with motor problems, and cold seizures occuring, but i have not heard of so many mito's suffering seizures or blow ups as Aprilias. Then again there are lots of storys of knackerd electrics on Mito's and i have heard about rectifers, alternators, and batteries giving up too easily. The NSR seems very reliable, and i guess its as unburstable as any other japanese 2 stroke 125 engine.

The Mito plastics seem fairly strong. For crashability one of the Freccias we have has been dropped at least twice on each side. Yes it scratched the bodywork up and put a small crack in one panel, but nothing serious. One mechanic I spoke to said with the Freccia you can just jack the bike up under the fairing to remove a wheel as it will take it easily.

The Cagiva engines are far worse than the Aprilia ones for cold seizures. They also have a problem with the power valve. The valve needs to have the stop adjusted to prevent it touching the piston. To do this you need to remove the head.

I think the Mitos electrics are largly Japanese. The Freccia and early Mito certainly are. I think the power valve control unit is virtually the same as the TZR for example.

Not too keen on the GFR styling, and I prefer the original SP01. However, from the CX we own, the Gilera engine is not reliable. The bodywork is fairly poor quality (and seems to be getting more brittle with age), and the frame is just a few steel pressings welded together. I am not keen on the styling of the current RS. Mine is a very early one which is the one I like most, but I like them all up to around the '97 model.

Reliability wise they are all 125 2 strokes. Treat the RS well and they are reliable. Finish is good on an RS (way above the finish on my 1200 Bandit for example). All in all, if the NSR is more reliable (and according to a mechanic I chatted to at a local dealers who do loads of 2nd hand Italian imports it is worse than the RS) is is marginal. Bigger problem for the RS (as with any 125) is some of the people who own them, and that almost all rapidly get derestricted (suspect no more than 10% of the RSs on the road are still restricted) which puts more stress on the engine. Aprilia sell several thousand a year in the UK (7th or 8th best selling bike in the UK), most of whome are learners who havent yet learnt not to thrash an engine from cold. One in the local bike shop (had the day off for a few MOTs) has one in for repair that has blown up because it seized. The reason it seized is that the owner got hos mate to replace the clutch plates, and they wrecked the oil pump drive doing it. With no 2 stroke oil they wrecked the top end of the engine.

The rubber inserts on the footrests are more styling than anything else. The Freccia had them as did the '87 model Aprilia AF1, but both have given up on them since as they have aimed to make the bikes styling more sporting. From memory the Mito sidestand is quite a nice die cast aluminium item rather than the steel things used by most makers (and the RS side stand is a straight copy of a Honda one, with the small rubber foot on it!)

Personally I think the best looking 125 is the late Mito. Looks far better than the Ducati 916 that the styling is loosely based on. Maybe I should hunt round and buy one some time

All the best

Our old Freccia would do 105mph, but speedo on that bike also read lower than any other bike we clocked it against. On the other hand it had been ported, and the power started at 9500rpm with a 10000rpm red line and the power ending at 11000.

Sounds like my RS, or the Cagiva. Only electrical problems I have had on 125s were the crappy wiring on my old MBX125, an earth problem on the clocks on the early AF1 (both of the ones we have had the same problem where the seperate earths joined together), a failed regulator on an early AF1, an ignition problem on the RS (havent yet traced it down as I just put on a spare rotor, stator and coil), and loads of problems with the Gilera CX125 (at 1200km from new the coil broke down and fired through the electronic rev counter, reducing the electrics in the clocks to a charred mess). Not too bad for around 120000km on various 125s.

Like the very early (C9 model) Freccia. Oh, silly story time. Moto Morini used the C9 Freccia Chassis for the Dart (used the Morini 350 v twin, later a 400). They also showed a developement off using the later Freccia bodywork but with a cut down fairing so you could see the engine. In a marketing idea from someone who obviously did not know English they called the prototype the K9!

Hi

What problem are you having? Is it charging correctly? On the Freccia we had charging problems which just turned out to be the main wire from the regulator to the battery. At the regulator end the wire had corroded. Just needed a new connector crimping in place and it was fine.

If the bike is charging and the battery just not holding charge then sounds like the battery is shot. These batteries are quite cheap (I paid £14 each for 3 I got a few weeks back), or you have a current drain. Have you got an alarm? To check for a current drain undo the positive terminal from the battery (with the ignition off) and use an ameter between the positive terminal and the wires you have just disconnected. On my better halfs car the battery was dying after about 3 days of not being used. This was a current drain of only 0.79 amps

U all make out as if the NSR is slow. The Mito and RS have all of 5mph more which is hardly anything and when u see how reliable the NSR is it is an obvious choice. Ok the Mito is gorgeous but too expensive and the RS looks like a bloated goldfish. If i had to have an RS it would be the 250 it looks just like the 125 and i doubt police would know the difference especially if u put 125cc stickers on it. NSR is the most reliable and is cheepest to run. They cant be that much slower as i have never been beaten by either of the 2 bikes

Until they do a vehicle check and get back that it is a 250.

Hi

Guessed you were joking. Yes, 250 stroker fuel consumption is bad, but to really frighten yourself look at an RG500. A friend had an early Mazda RX7 with an Elford turbo conversion on it (was a conversion from new, supplied by Mazda dealers keeping the new car warrenty). On a run down the M6 he managed 9mpg

Ah yes the old RG500, that was one very enviroment unfriendly device, but a great classic all the same. The sound of an RG500 is unique, but then so is the RD500 and NS400. The last of the two stroke multis, shame really. I nearly brought an NS400 a couple of years ago, but common sense prevailed, and i got my KMX instead. Id love to build a more modern looking machine with an NS or RD motor, but its well beyond my means for the forseeable future. Did you ever see Mark Dents Gamma 500? Thats a real beast of a bike.

Hi

The NS400 was a good looking bike, and one of the best handling bikes of its time. Pity it sounded like 3 ducks farting. However, power wise it is harldy going to set the world alight any more, and a 4 stroke 400 would give it a hard time.

I remember years back that Suzuki provided an RG250 for a road test, which went suspiciously quicker than the previuos years model. A strip down revealed RG500 pistons, taking it out to 265cc. Of course this was a "private project" which just happened to be leant out for the road tests.

Plenty of diffences really. Havent heard anyone complaining that the NSRs fox eye headlights make it look like another Honda Wink

Thats bizzare!! I was walking down the street todaywith my girlfriend and could see this bike coming towards us. As it went past I saw that it was a RG500. It stopped at the lights, and when I heard the bike revving I thought to myself that it sounded like a 2 stroke.
So it is eh? Confused
