Well, I will be doing the road part of my CBT tomorrow so have been looking at 125's so I can have a play before I do my DAS course.
So far Im liking the Aprilia RS125 and Honda CBR125 which one would you go for? Or could you recomend a similar 'styled' bike?
Im just after somthing to have a play on and just get used to riding on the road (but dont want anything too slow) before I do my DAS cos I know once I do my DAS, I wont have the disapline to remain safe and buy a reasonable bike
I wont be doing any long commutes... I got a car for that so just want a nippy bike that handles well to have some fun on.
Cue ramblings about just doing your DAS and getting a proper bike |

You know what we are going to say, don't you?
NO 125 is that quick, all are 'nippy' enough.
Personally, I'd be more concerned about which was the easiest to sell, with least depreciation, once I had a licence, and least likely to be 'hassle' while I owned it, vis how likely I was to drop it, and how difficult and expensive it would be to repair.... leading a sensible person to something like a YBR125 or CBF 125.... MAYBE, just MAYBE a CBR125 at a pinch.... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

RS125. Keep it, destrict it after you get your license, use it for larks until it assplodes.
If you're going to sell up, the CBR125, since it's less likely to shag itself before you can get shot of it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

'Better' is very subjective.... its the more sophisticated, and its the higher performance machine, granted. Whether that makes it 'better' is another matter.... 'better' insurance premiums, better mpg, better running costs, better spares back up, better reliability, many would argue made the CBR the 'better' bike, particularly compared to 'restricted' learner legal RS that doesn't actually have the 'better' performance for the sacrifices.....
PErsonally, I think lower buy price, better durability of a YBR makes that 'better' for a learner than either.....
Depends what the criteria are.....
Is an R1 'better' than a Pan European?
Is an MZ250ETZ 'better' than a Honda VFR400? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I like the CBR better, I used to have an RS but couldnt get used to it and wanted something a bit easier for a learner. So now I have the CBR it is much slower but I feel more confident on it. I did my CBT about 3 months ago but wanted a 125 to practice on as I probably wont do test until next year now. |

That's what I would like an old round lamp Mito for...
But, I'm too pragmatic, and much as l like the look of the old mito, and the way they ride, and as Keith says, the 'unforgiving' nature of the bike demanding you give it 10/10ths to get ANYTHING out of it, really, let alone its 'best', all within an envelope that's no SO daft in public roads.....
Its a quixotic special, and I know that if I do ever get one, it will be mostly for the fun of renovating, and then as a staitic display piece sat in my collection, or in the stack at the very occassional meet I might take it to!
For the 'All or Nothing' high octane 'experience'.... You need to take it to the track.... no gatso cameras, no pop up pedestrians, nice wide tree-free run off strips and a St Johns ambulance on Stand-By!
And followng THAT idea to a conclusion, the self imposed limitations of a 125 road bike aren't necessary, you could run a 400, 600 or litre bike, and 'push it', if you wanted; and there are a lot of bikes that are a lot more 'at home' on the circuit, you can push the envelope on, which can be easier on maintenence and your wallet.... BUT...... depends what you are looking for really.
As said; "Best" is a very subjective thing. In sanctioned race, its what crosses the line ahead of every-one elce....... every where elce, depends what you want it to do for you. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Things OP mentioned: 'Something to play on' 'Don't want aything too slow' 'No long commutes' 'Handles well and can have some fun on'
Things not mentioned: Maintenance, resale value, reliability, GSXR1000's, R1's, YBRs, insurance blah blah blah.
The lad is askng about the two bikes he fancies, not how tight arsed the population of BCF is. He says he wants a bike that handles well to enjoy, the RS125 embodies everything about that.

Already said that he wants something not too slow and handles well. So we'd be looking at the R1 or VFR as being 'better'.
Anyway given the criteria actually mentioned VS the economy brigades opinions there isnt really a contest between the two options. I must have been really lucky with my RS125 as a first bike as it seemed pretty quick, handled very well and didnt blow up. Then again I dont choose my bikes on the basis of mpg, sellability, spares back up, insurance etc. I tend to buy what I want to buy! ____________________ RS125 > CBR6 > SV650S > ZX636R > GSX1300RZ Hayabusa > 06 RSVR Mille > SV1000S > Street Triple 765 RS |

How about the middle ground
The Honda NSR 125. Far more reliable than the RS and only slightly slower. I wish I had never sold my full power NSR, as Keith says there is something magical about pushing the engine to it's limits and never really being in that much danger of loosing your licence. Oh and the smell of Motul 710 in the morning
