Hello everyone!
What it is, is I passed my CBT April 2009, and I was expecting to drive, but due to the ridiculous prices related with doing that, I opted against it.
Now, my CBT expired in April and I haven't yet done it again, nor have I been riding illegaly.
I was just wondering around how much time (estimate) it would take, for me to do; CBT, Theory, MOD1 and MOD2?
I know the demand will vary in different areas therefore there'll be less of a waiting list, I was just looking for an estimate, how long did it take you to do? (If you did)
Thanks in advance!
P.S. I'm in North Wales if that helps at all! ____________________ Currently own a Honda NSR 125. |

All Depends on how much £ you want to spend
If you have the cash, you can book an intensive course with a school, with block booked tests, and be 'done' inside a week.
Going it alone, repeat tests, two week minimum lead between bookings, not booking more than the 'next' test in sequence, to avoid having to cancell if you fail..... piece of string....
Personally I'd say book Theory/Hazard first & get that out the way regardless. If you use on-line booking at the moment, earliest date you are likely to get will be about three weeks, to get one convenient, average is about month five weeks.
Mod 1, I believe has a slightly longer queue, but again, three to eight weeks. Mod 2, similar three to eight weeks.
But depends on centre. Some are more heavily booked than others.
Going it solo, booking thoery, lets say four weeks, but you can book CBT in the same window, so we can knock that one out the critical. Then add five for Mod 1 after thoery, five more for Mod 2 after mod 1, and you get something in the order of twelve to fifteen weeks, perhaps three or four months, with a little bit of room in thier for slippage or having to repeat, or getting lucky on an early booking or cancellation.
Now what is the REAL question behind this?
Taking a 'stab' are you trying to figure out of its worth buying a bike to do it all on, or whether to do do lessons, or an intensive course, and figure the ecconomics? And What is it you want out of it all? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Teflon-Mike - Money isn't really an issue, nor is time. Basically, I just want to be able to acquire a full license so that my 2 year restriction can begin!
When you say book an intensive course with a school... does this include lessons aswell? I don't mean to sound too cocky or anything, but I don't feel as though I'll need them to pass my MOD's, I felt as though my CBT was very straight forward and the only thing I didn't excel on was my observation. Although after riding a 50cc for a year, and I have now been riding a 125 since October, I feel as though this has hugely improved, I am always checking over my shoulder, checking mirrors etc.
I'm going to book my CBT asap because I just simply want to be back on the road for the summer.
I have recently been helping my girlfriend revise for her theory(car), which I believe has helped me a lot! I took a few mock exams on it and passed them, so if I were to put in a few hours here and there I think I'd have that nailed.
Then it's just a case of doing my MOD's. I'm hoping, because I live in North Wales, that the waiting list won't be very long, although I'm not too bothered about time!
Right I'm chatting shit now so I'll stop there haha. ____________________ Currently own a Honda NSR 125. |

Well I'm doing a DAS course (for full licence in my case), and I started about 16 days ago. I've had 3 sessions so far, passed my CBT, passed my theory and passed my Module 1 (did this last monday). I've got one more session and then my Module 2 test on Friday next week with 2 hours training before.
This cost me a total of around £715 and thats about 19 hours training, CBT, bike hire, tests, gear hire etc. And fingers crossed if I pass next Friday I would have done it within a month and I had never been on a bike before in my life
With DAS course, you can do the CBT and they will asses how much training you will need. Maybe one training for Module 1 to know what you need to do and the same for Module 2 if you have experience.
Or if you have a 125cc bike already you could try jumping in and doing your CBT with a training school and Mod 1 + 2 tests by yourself for restricted license - would be very cheap this way if you managed to pass first time. |

Wow, that's a LOT of money!
I think our situation differs in the fact that I have almost 2 years experience, against your none. So I don't feel as though (Really not trying to sound cocky at all, sorry if I come off that way!) I won't need training. My friend did his MOD's and said they were fairly straightforward and he believes I am capable of doing them without any problems.
I've been researching these MOD's on youtube and forums, to get the idea of exactly what you have to do, my friend has also talked me through it so I don't believe I'll have much problems passing them.
I think what I'm going to do is:
- Book my CBT asap.. so that I'm back on the road!
- Book my theory
- Then and only once I've passed my theory, I'll book my MOD1
- Then MOD2
I'm just going to book them as I pass, I don't want to be calling up to cancel if I fail my theory or whatever, time isn't really an issue so I guess this is my best option! |
Certainly isn't cheap, and I ain't too impressed with the price myself but it will get me my bike license.
I understand about the experience thing, no worries there I've done some training with people who have been riding around on 125's for a year or more. You can see they have lots of road confidence and are used to others on the road around them.

Oh, if you've been riding for a while and are confident, then just book yourself, and go for cancellations. I passed Mod 1, came home, hit the DSA site and got a booking for Mod 2 the next morning.
Some of the DSA videos on YouTube are fairly helpful with letting you know what to expect - watching the Mod 1 videos takes longer than doing the Mod 1 test.
The only thing I'd sound a note of caution about is the hazard perception in the theory. You will want to get yourself a training DVD from any supermarket and do some practice, since the scoring zones in the hazard clips can be a little peculiar - you may find yourself clicking before the spazz that produced the DVD considers that the hazard has "developed". ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Did my CBT 6th May, Theory on the 21st May, 1st lesson 10th June. I've got to book a second lesson on a 500, including MOD1 practice at Garretts Green. All being well, after that, MOD1 test with MOD2 practice, then MOD2 test. trying to spread the cost if possible.
If cost is no problem, then there's always the circuit based training at Mallory Park. I think a 5 day course is about £1100 Their website is circuitbasedtraining.co.uk .....I think. |

Whereas a CBT is around £90-100
Theory - £30ish? (Not completely sure)
MOD1 - £15
MOD2 - I think it's £90?
So around £235 altogether?
I think.. |
That's about right, £121.50 above CBT cost. £31 for Theory/Haz, £15.50 for Mod 1, £75 for mod 2.
There re surcharges for weekend bookings, and school block bookings though.
Hinkley Rider Training, where I have Snowie booked in, doing 'lessons'... and she's been riding six years on CBT.... take note... JUST becouse you have been riding, don't mean your any good at it!... Fresh-faced, and knowing you know nothing, you are a blank canvas and can learn quickly and easily, how to impress an examiner. Going it alone, you might have survived, but chances are you'll have learned a lot of 'lazy' habbits, and been doing stuff 'wrong', and the only stuff you will have learned to do 'right' will have been by accident.... usually the accident that tough you what you WERE doing wasn't so clever!
Hence, having been riding, you are not an empty cup, you have stuff in there, that may be sour, and needs washing out, some stuff that's OK, but in all liklihood, more than a few grimed in stubborn rings, that refuse to budge, making it harder work to actually get you to test standard, over a complete newbie.
AND, approach is the biggest hurdle. Fact you are even SAYING you reckon you DONT need training, probably makes you untrainable....
You would go into lessons, thinking you know more than you do, unresponsive to learning, thinking you know it all already, and 'stuff' chucked at you by instructors all a 'waste of time'...... hence you will MISS something in there that is useful to you.... and as likely, get very little from it all.
A word of warning, for you to ponder.
Roger, is a go it aloner... he passed his test without formal lessons... he reckons that training is all a conspiracy to mystify riding a motorcycle, and fleece the gullible newbie of thier money.. he too is very unresponsive to being 'tought'... he learns by doing... usuaully doing it WRONG and has to challenge, and test presented wisdom at every opportunity..... becouse basically he's a paranoid, pict, who trusts no-one! Going it alone, is pretty much the only way he could have done it.... but there you go.....
Going it alone is doable, as Roger and others have proved. And as Roger keeps harping on, you cant pass your test in a lesson, but you can learn during a (failed) test......
At £75 a pop for a failed test, though, on top of the cost of repairs 'learning by accident'... cab be a painful and costly way about it.....
Your call..... you probably don't need, a few days of intensive training, BUT, half a dozen two hour sessions are a good way to assure a pass, without so much grief, and dont need to be THAT expensive. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I took my cbt back when i was newly 16. But after turning 17, i had the full liscense taken and passed within 17 days. And this was with a mod 1 failure aswell. Theory, on my birthday. Intensive 2 days course. Fail mod one. Retake mod one. Then mod 2. All in 17 days. So it can all be done pretty damned quick if your lucky

I passed my CBT on 11 June, and did my theory, mod 1 and mod 2 in three weeks and now hold a full bike license.
Took me less than three months. As long as you have a bit of road sense and do a bit of practicing and read up a LOT (these forums probably saved my ass) then you'll be fine.
Good luck to you buddy. ____________________ Honda CG125 -> Suzuki GSF Bandit 600 S |

For me:
CBT £100
Theory £62 (2nd attempt)
Mod 1 £15.50
Mod 2 £75
So £252.50
*Excluding £150 given to a canny but overpriced instructor who I just used for access to Mod 1 site (had to do at least one lesson with him on the road to confirm I was good for Mod 1 which I was, one on site practice and a final bike hire due to difficulties with my own) all the 'training' was more or less re-assurance and a chance to rehearse the Mod 1 on a test bike which I didn't have to worry about getting me to college for the next few weeks. Had no qualms doing Mod 2 with not formal training.
https://www.youtube.com/user/learn2rideVIDEOS These helped alot for me with tidying up my riding and I didn't have to fork over £50 everytime I watched them went out at night and put into practice what I learned
Learning by experience is by no means for everybody but I advocate it if your confident in your own abilities as a rider which you seem to be. ____________________ Current: 02 FZS 1000 & 91 Royal Enfield Bullet 350 Some Bike Pics...
