hi i am new to the forum an i am looking to get my 1st "big bike" has iam only 18 it would need to be restricted so about a 600 would be better. A 400 would be too small because im 6 foot 2 iam riding a derbi terra adventure 125 at the min but will be looking at spending £2000 to £2500 on something that is not bad looking but cheapish on insurance has any of you got any suggestions?

cheers Aiden

Can I ask what you would be using the bike for? Commuting? Sunday flyer? Touring?

Something without a fairing. It will end up on its side at some point and those plastic panels are pricey.

I know it's not everyones cup of tea, but I've just got me a Honda VT500E. I'm also 6'2", and it feels just right Ridden it on some private land). It is 50bhp, but restricting it shoudn't affect it too much.

The only think I have to do now is pass my mod 2 later in the month

Yep I would sit down for that one and an R6 quote too.

How about a CBR600f?? You can get a decent early "ally" with your budget.

For instance:

A very good all rounder Thumbs Up

I have been asking myself the same question aiden and as some others have stated, you would be better off buying a fairly cheap 2nd hand bike because you WILL drop it lol.
It is a VERY big step from a 125 to a 600 so its beyond me why nearly everyone in shops and forums suggest strongly in getting one straight after you pass you're test Rolling Eyes
It is a shame a lot of the mid range bikes (between 250cc and 600cc) have been discontinued in the uk because a lot of the older 350/400cc bikes weigh around the same as the 600's of today.
Then when you have had some practice on you're cheap 2nd hand bike and you're confident that you wont drop youre bike often, then get an r6 or something more cherished :p.

What bike...? Might I suggest you do a little topic search (I've helped you out with a few listed below) and read some of the usual suggestions. Then nip onto Google Images and look at the style of bikes you like. Then go along to a bike shop and sit aside a few and make your decision based on what fits YOU best. Thumbs Up

+1 on the CBR600F. Thumbs Up
However, please take anything I say with a nice bucket of salt, as I've only been a biker for 2 weeks, and a CBR owner for 1!

There's plenty of power to scare me badly if I'm not cautious, but with some discipline, it's absolutely fine. The posture isn't too hunched like supersports bikes. My acquaintance, who is a long-time MC enthusiast recommended I get the CBR600F, which he thought would be far better choice over 400cc sports bikes, which I initially was looking at, as I liked the aesthetics of sports bikes, but did not want to get something too powerful, fearing I'd get myself into too much trouble. The point he made was that the 400CCs would need lots of revving to get going, and would definitely sound like you intended to get yourself into trouble on the roads.

Please note though, this is a highly individual thing. I can tell you that if I'd gotten my license 5 years ago, the fool I was back then (I'm far more sensible today) would've definitely gotten me killed on the CBR. No doubt about it.

A lot of experienced folks have shared plenty of wisdom in many threads around here. Listen to them (but don't forget own critical thinking Wink ). I just thought I'd share my feelings as a noob.
