On my way to see some friends yesterday and I was using the sat nav on my phone. It speaks through my helmet Bluetooth and tells me where to go, I didn't really listen to it and got on the motorway and it said to me "you are now on a highway, unable to direct you anymore" bloody thing! Used to never use it but as im rather skilled at getting lost I use it. How's your sense of direction?

My sense of direction is really good.... but being a former delivery driver, and having 20+ years of pre-satnav road experience probably helps.

Even for destinations that I've never been to before, just a quickest look at a map for the general direction is usually more than enough

a quick glance at google maps... and then a gander at relevant landmarks on the route via street view and i can 9/11 times find my target... Wink

I am usually very good but when I have an off day, man do I get lost. Have found it helpful having a Pulse Mini (£20) lashed up next to my dash. Rarely need it, but has been handy to glance at while doing runs though London.

I just look at a route on Google maps, sometimes print out the route plan if a long journey and sort of follow it if I don't see signs telling me where I need to go next.

If I get really lost I have a proper satnav in my phone (ovi maps, it's a Nokia), as well as free internet so I can even use google maps (if I have a decent signal)

Not managed to get lost in some time.

My sense of direction is awful. I get lost almost everytime I go out on the bike. I just randomly go off with no end goal, I usually end up surrounded by fields about 60 miles away from home. I find my way back alright though, I just follow the road signs.

When I'm heading somewhere a fair distance away I'll generally click onto Google maps.
I'll memorise the big places/tourist places that I'll pass on the way and then just check which general direction I'll have to head in.

That way I'll just ride that direction checking out sign posts heading towards the places that I need to go.

I tend to only stray far away when I'm out for a pleasure ride, I never have the need to go far with a destination in mind, so I tend to just ride until sufficiently lost (can sometimes be hard) then follow road signs home. HOWEVER, I HATE being out without my sat-nav available as a last resort, bigger motorways etc. are signposted well but getting into little towns and one way systems can be an arse. I was TERRIFIED to get lost on the 125 because it couldn't handle a motorway for any more than about 2 junctions, but the 500 lets me just fuck off out all day

SatNav all the way. Don't normally have the time to get lost. Except for touring. Then I switch on my TomTom to find my way out.

I'll admit that my sense of direction is about as good as a women's. Wink

Now having a new job of being a delivery driver in a 3.5 ton van at 18 I'm hoping it will improve!

Thumbs Up

I was gonna post that but you beat me to it! Hahaha Laughing

Yeah, I use google maps but I frequently memorise a turn or something and think it doesn't look like what it did so I take another turning Laughing

I was 10 mins late to sixth form the other day at another school and it was my first day there haha! Only on the other side of the city too Razz But in general I would say I have a average-great sense of direction.

Very good for me but sat nav has made me lazy so recently i've been turning it off and just getting on with it.

I can make my way to most of uk cities with out it and got myself to brussels last friday without, so using it is just being damn lazy and i need to use my brain before it starts to rot

My sense of direction is alright if I know where I'm going - and if its somewhere local I can usually hack out a route from areas I know.

But, my ability to read road-signs is annoyingly under-par. Confused

After more than a decade driving for a living. My sense of direction works fine getting from A to B anywhere across the UK on primary and A roads. A couple of minutes before departure looking at a route that I`ve not been before on a road atlas will mentally fix the route in my head, and off I go. Its the last 1/2 mile or so to a destination where I`ve never been before, is where the satnav comes in handy, along with the arrival time feature on it so I can tell the people in the office when I should be getting there if theres an impatient customer waiting for a delivery.

Seeing as I am, unlike so many people these days, blessed with this old thing called 'common sense', I've never found navigation particularly challenging.

Of course if you're so completely unaware of your surroundings that you have no concept of north-south-east-west or roughly where major towns, cities and big roads are on our comparatively tiny little island then you're screwed.

Sat nav is very useful for finding your way around labyrinthine mock-Tudor housing estates but if you need it for higher level stuff like 'how do I get to Birmingham' then I suggest spending some quality time with an atlas.

Google maps before I leave with notes taped to the tank/tankbag if its a really tricky one. The ability to read roadsigns is pretty helpful; if I get truly lost then the iPhone has bailed me out a few times.

Also, ask people! If the don't look like a mental hillbilly bum-rapist, chances are they'll be quite helpful.
