No. As a learner you can't ride anything larger than a 125cc AND making no more power than 14.6 bhp.

(Unless you're over 21 and on a DAS course.)

Fit a sidecar. Even then its power to weight must not exceed 0.16KW/Kg.

But the bike itself still needs not to be over 125..

There's no loopholes anymore!

I suppose you could sleeve it, or fit a 125cc engine...? A bit extreme when you can actually buy a 125 that's learner legal out of the box.

If it's a twin, pull one of the spark plugs out. That might not satisfy Plod though - he's a bit of a pedant - so you'd be as well filling that cylinder with concrete.

If it's a single cylinder, then only fill it half way, obviously.

Better to use mortar, the stones in concrete will get stuck in the plug hole.

Obviously I mean bricklayers mortar, not artillery rounds.

It is impossible.

If you are on 'L' plates, you cannot ride a motorcycle >125cc or >14.6bhp, unless you are on your DAS course, over 21 and being supervised by a trained instructor.

Pass your test instead of looking for loopholes that don't exist. Thumbs Up!

Embarassed You're quite right. I was thinking of a mix with pea-gravel aggregate, but that's not technically concrete, and it's important to be precise - I shudder to think what would happen if you mis-mortared an engine. Shocked

utter rubbish. engine can be any siz on l plates if a sidecar is fitted, provided it doent exceed the power to weight limit.

That link doesn't work.


The law is so bloody vuage. But a "0.16KW/Kg" restriction still doesn't answer it, you could have a a heavy bike and side car equating to 0.16KW/Kg but the bike could be 500cc, as long as the thing is 4 times heavier than a 125 with sidecar, I don't understand the sense.

The link is now fixed.

The point is that a sidecar outfit is considerably heavier than a solo so needs more power overall for the same performance. The power to weight ratio keeps overall performance in the range of a 125 solo. So yes, it won't be any faster than a 125. But it is an over 125 l plate legal bike. One can always detach the sidecar once you pass your test.
