Is there a problem with you existing brakes?

Try overhauling your existing callipers as well, new seals, fluid and a good clean can work wonders.

This.

However people have done adaptor plates for various calipers on NC30s over the years. Rick Oliver's probably the guy to speak to.

This. Consider braided lines along with good pads.
While they aren't the most amazing calipers, I've seen plenty of people win races with them just fine Smile.

I have braided lines all round and the pads cost a me a small fortune.

I didnt think of overhauling the brakes. I just dont feel overly confident when braking Confused

In what way don't you feel confident. More likely to be a suspension/tyre issue than a caliper issue IMO.

You should be able to stand an NC30 on it's nose from A road speeds without too much effort. If you can't with good hoses and pads, then yes, sounds like it needs a service Thumbs Up.

When im braking I feel like I have to squeeze the brakes harder than I should to stop effieciently. Not so much at higher speeds when I just need to slow down a bit, but more at mid to lower speeds when I might need to stop suddenly or slow down quickly.

My brakes are absolutely fantastic since I put braided lines, new pads and stripped and cleaned them. I rarely have to use more than 1 finger lightly squeezing Laughing Used to be 4 fingers and digging feet into the floor Mr. Green

Give them a strip down and give them a nice clean Thumbs Up

Will give it a try, so when you say strip them down and clean them, I should be taking the calipers off, pads out and just literally wiping them down with some sort of cleaning fluid? Shifty

Well, not sure how your calipers are, but mine split into 2 pieces, I pumped the pistons out, cleaned inside them with brake cleaner and a soft toothbrush. Reassembled and then bled them etc.. The difference that it made is crazy, i'll be doing it again after winter.

If you're going to do everything you'd also need to pull all the pistons out, clean any corrosion out from behind the seals, replace any seals that are knackered and replace any pistons that are pitted. Might need to replace the orings that seal both sides of the calipers if they're opposed piston calipers, too.

Will cost you a fortune!

Get the spanners out it isn't hard, practice on the rear brake first so if you do find you are unable to do it (you wont, but it is nice to have a backup plan) then you can still ride it to a garage somewhere.

Replacing the piston in the master cylinder is simple enough. As far as the caliper goes, its likely to be quite rotten but isnt too hard to once its all cleaned up.

I might be crazy but what about just bleeding them.

Why has no one mentioned that yet? Rolling Eyes

If you have decent pads and braided lines try that, it will cost you £3 in brake fluid and take you an hour if you are borderline retarded.

As for cleaning them up this is also a piece of piss, although a little more expensive if you haven't got the bits.

You will need to buy brake cleaner £5
Toothbrushes 11p for 2 in Tesco
Silicone grease £????
Copperslip £????

Take the pads out, pump the pistons out, use the brake cleaner and tooth brush to clean them, then put the grease on and put them back together using copper slip on the back of the pads and on any pins/threads.

Brake seals are usually more expensive than the pads and don't often need doing.

If the brakes needed bleeding wouldnt the brake lever feel spongie? I dont want to get it wrong bleeding them as I could do more harm than good and get air in the system? Being as I am truly borderline retarded Laughing

Yea, were it me, I'd start with a cursory clean, lube and bleed - shouldn't take much more than three quarters of an hour and may well make a big difference.

I can always give you a hand Shereen Thumbs Up

You've got 4 pots anyway which are nice to work on Very Happy.

Give them a good clean etc. If they are still no better let me know asap and if I've got time I will get you to order the parts and we can spend a morning doing them.

I love working on brakes as it's very satisfying at the end Smile.

All the advice so far is sound, although I’d replace all seals as a matter of course if I’m taking the thing to bits. Also where the seals sit might need a good scrap out?

But back to your original question, yes it is possible there might be a 6 pot that could bolt on direct or need one off machined spacers. It’s the type of knowledge an owners club might have for members?

Thanks! I may well take you up on that. I will have a go when I get a chance and see how I get on with cleaning them.

The fluid was changed about 2000 miles ago when it last had a service.
