for ice cream!
This is a photo of the sightglass on my ZZR600E. Can anyone confirm that is indeed coolant that is in there?

Does this mean the headgasket is gone?
The bike went down on it's side a few days ago. An oil change was done a few weeks ago and there wasn't any of that before. It was just your standard black oil up to the correct level.
Is it possible for coolant to leak into the engine when a bike is dropped on it's side?

On its right side?
Can't see how dropping a bike would make the head gasket leak but what about the water pump mechanical seal? Good chance the water pump cover would have touched down if it went over to the right. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. that looks like contamination, either water in the coolant or someone's been jizzing in your oil filler. ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. you need to work out where the water got in first.Just reassembling it will do nothing except waste time and money.as Stinkwheel wrote you need to check the water pump has'nt been damaged for starters, banging the pump may have knacked the gasket.any cases with water channels in them need checking.
go over the whole engine, checking for any hidden damage to the head and cases. ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. On the zzr riders group website there's a reference to the water pump. The lower bolt has an O washer. When it goes then you can get oil leaks but a member suggests that the ring also stops water getting in the oil https://www.zzr-rg.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5163 ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. That's a fairly small quantity of mayo. I'd have expected more if there was a significant coolant leak. Could just be condensation.
If it was me, I'd fill it back up with some cheap and cheerful oil and go for a decent run, keeping an eye on the temperature and coolant level. If there is a leak, you'll get more mayo. If it was condensation, you wont.
To give you an idea, this is the crankcase breather catch can off my Enfield. This is an AIR COOLED bike. There is no coolant, that mayo is purely from combustion gasses inside the engine. Now imagine how much you'd get from a coolant leak.

Just to add, my experince with Vmaxii. Short journeys tend to make that mayo stuff. It's always a worry to see that stuff. It's much worse if you fit clear engine cases. Sometimes it's better not to know what's going on inside

Thanks a lot for your help stinkwheel. I actually have a new clutch gasket but I was putting off fitting it because I also need new clutch plates but couldn't afford them.
At this point I'll put the new clutch gasket on and drain the horrible oil. Then I'll do as you said and take it for a decent run and hope for the best. Thank you all for your help. I will let you know how I get on. |
