I have a 1999 aprilia rs 125. I lost the key(don't have a spare) because im an idiot. So i've bought a new ignition barrel and that and when i was trying to remove the tope yoke i couldn't because the steering lock is on. I can't turn the ignition because i don't have the key and the only other way i can see is smashing the barrel off but this could go horribly wrong and just make things worse. Is there a more peaceful way to remove it? Also what would be the best way to remove a shear bolt, as i have to do this as well to remove the barrel.

you wont damaged the frame, snapping the lock, just twist the bars hard enough it will snap, steering locks are only to deter the lazy bike tea leaf.

Do be careful though as it has been known for snapped steering locks to re lock while riding. Make sure you remove the lugs and pin.

How can they prove it if the bike doesn't get recovered? Or if it does get recovered, how do they prove the thief didn't snap it?

Okay... Steering lock first...
If a quick twist of the bars doesn't do it, providing you have access to a basic workshop you could make a 'universal key'...
Basically a thin strip of strong steel just small enough to push into the lock with a 'T' piece welded on the other end of it.
Knock it as far into the lock as you can and twist it sharply clockwise. This should unlock it (may take a couple of goes).
Or you could try drilling through the barrel (down the keyhole) and use a screwdriver to turn it.

To remove the security bolts, a hammer & strong screwdriver are your friends (or using a dremel or similar, cut a slot into the head of each bolt and use a screwdriver to undo them).

Before anyone asks... I'm not (and have never been) a car/bike thief!
I lost a set of keys for my first car...and learnt from that Wink
Incidentally, I found the keys a week later :/

i tried snapping the lock but i couldn't :\. I thought it might be because i was not strong enough but even one of my bigger mates couldn't manage it.Is there a technique to it or something? I have tried with a screwdriver but again no joy i reckon its probs the sizing but i think im going to go buy a little angle grinder or something and just cut it off. Let you know how it goes.

Get a friend to sit on the bike, you push the bars as if you are trying to snap the lock, friend pulls the other handle bar towards him.

Snap.

We managed to snap the lock sort of. Rather than the pin snap it just cut a groove into my frame so now the steering will move but the top yoke still wont lift out. If i was to get an angle grinder in there how much damage would the sparks etc cause?

You cut your frame...

Neutral

Take the petrol tank off, simple on the RS... that reduces a chance of mass flames... also block off the fuel pipe to carb.

Use some tweezers to turn the lock in undo direction while at same time using a bit of wire or small key etc to rake over the pins inside the lock. keep the tension on the lock all the time (turning tweezers).

This may, if you are lucky unlock it but not very likely. Once you've had enough, stick a beefy flat blade screwdriver in the keyhole (keeping tension on) and give it a damn good twist.

Screwdrivers with the hex for a spanner on are good ones for doing it with.

We used to do this when doing a repo on cars we couldn't get keys for and didn't have time to piss about doing it properly
