Hi guys.

I recently bought a Ducati Diavel and to be honest, it's my pride and joy! Where I live, bike thefts are extremely rare but obviously I cannot dismiss the possibility - either at home or especially when out and about.

The bike comes with a standard Ducati immobiliser but these will deter few. I am considering a decent disc lock for when I park the bike away from home. A chain and anchor point for when she is in the garage. A Ducati-approved alarm system, for obvious reasons. And finally, Road Angel Bike Trac.

Here are my options below:

Lock and Chain: Mammoth Thatcham Approved Motorbike Lock & Chain - around £50

Brake disc lock: ABUS Granit Quick Mini - Around £85

Diavel Ducati Performance Anti-theft System: - £250 (hopefully fitted)

Road Angel Bike Trac: £299.99 plus £99.99/year subscription.

So, what would be my best options out off all of the above? Do I really need an alarm system if I have the Bike-Trac fitted? Should I bother with the chain/lock and the disc lock? Should I consider having the bike datatagged/alphadotted??

Any advice would be gratefully received. Thumbs Up

Wow. That's one helluva chain. I'd hate to lose the key!

The disc lock looks superb at it can be taken out and about and fixed directly to the disc and then used with a chain and fixed to an anchor point at home. Thumbs Up

I've got a Xena disc (alarmed) lock. It's good, fits well to my disc, but is a little temperamental in the cold when frost/due gets on it. I've also never see the 'claw' thing on the website from the link above. I like the look of that. I've used a cheap chain when I first got my bike, they managed to get through one side of the link, but were unable to pry it open enough to get the chain off, I suspect they didn't have enough time to get through the other side, though they did take a shot at the padlock, which resulted in me snapping the key in it, trying to get it off! Definitely get the best chain you can afford.

The most important piece of security you can get is for the scum to not know it is there in the 1st place. Sounds a bit obvious and patronising for which I apologise, but it is so true...

What would be good if there was an independent body where chain manufacturers submitted a link from the respective chains for hardness testing.

Then the results should be published online. It would shame the shoddy manufacturers and hopefully make the better ones compete knowing that there is independent testing.

What about experiences with trackers and alarms? Will they reduce my insurance premiums? If so, which one is probably best to have? Some people say that take the tracker over an alarm. Is it worth having both?

What about Datatagging? Their claims are quite impressive. What do you all think?

A bit like https://www.soldsecure.com/ perhaps?

These guys also seem to have a similar rep to Almax, but are slightly cheaper: https://www.elitesecuritysupplies.com/locks_and_chains.htm

If nothing else, if you go for a 19mm chain, it's pretty likely thieves will just move on to the next one, which is in the end what keeps your bike safe.

I think they're reselling from here. https://www.torc-anchors.com/products.php?cat=16

If you're going 19mm, get an anti-pinch pin, means you need less chain and are locking it through something structural rather than a wheel.

Yea, looks the same, but they don't do the top 'untouchable' model chain that elite does.

Oh and it should be noted the 19mm chains really aren't too practical to carry around etc.

Not really G. Want I am hoping for is a site (and organisation) that does specific scientific tests for say Hardness Testing, Brittleness testing etc.. for a range of temperatures and then displays the actual measurements each chain achieves.

Then they display the results in a league table showing which has the best results.

There are many who would say that, judging from their dubious testing results, soldsecure are far from independant.

Also £85 for a disclock is pointless imo, you'd be better off with a crap chain for out and about. At least then they have to spend 10 seconds in public view cropping it before the bike is lifted into a van (likely in your case as i doubt it can be hotwired easily). The disc lock would be pretty much irrelevent. Still worth getting one but a much cheaper one will do the job.

Nick bike, break into bits. Wheres tracker now...?

I see the point on trackers in exotic cars but tbh, if they nick it most of the damage will be them tearing it apart or smashing it up.

By that time, you'll wish it never came back Laughing

They cost a fortune too, might cost less to buy a gun and sleep in the garage.

I suspect specific figures won't be a great deal of use.
For instance the metal it's self might be very 'hard', but if the method they use to join the link is 'bad', it could compromise the entire chain.
And this doesn't give us the full story of how difficult it actually is for a thief to remove the chain.

Why the CISA lock rather than the squire padlock?

I'm just checking my squire lock isn't inferior in some way.
