Never really had a fast car, so this is a good car for entry level stuff I guess.
The car it's self, is a Renault Clio Mk1, 1.2
Currently sitting on 13" steel wheeels, completely stock car, with a sneaky 1.8 16v F7P engine under the hood.
Been a bit of a project over the past few months. The first engine we fitted blew up, doh!
This is the second motor we've stuck in it.
It's got a Chipped ECU, De-Cat 1.8 exhaust system, PiperX induction kit, and soon to have a 4 branch manifold and Williams down pipes.
Speed wise, it's fun!
I wouldnt say excessively fast, but it holds it own against most other cars I come across on the road.
So far, I've had a play with most hot hatches, It seems 90% of them off, including the 172 Clio 2, It'll hold it's own against a Civic Type R, Last night I surprised a guy in a Celica Turbo.
Under the bonnet:
https://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/321546_10150330676675606_506045605_7987814_1654758065_n.jpg
Currently dont have any decent pictures of the whole car, but I'm washing and polishing it this week, as well as fitting a set of 14" steelies on it, with decent tyres. Got to go bigger so I can get decent brakes on it! Tried slowing down quickly from 140mph the other night, and the brakes were completely inadequate, before they completely faded away, and I had no stopping power, forcing me to enter a roundabout at a silly speed.
Lets see your sleepers!

That is fucking sick mate, I've got a 1.4 'S' 2000 clio, isn't exactly fast but its good fun in the higher revs, it must be awsome seeing people's reactions when what looks like a standard car can move!

I have a 1.4 Mk1 Clio
I'm interested to hear what you've done to improve the handling as mine is pretty shit, especially in comparison to my mum's old 205 of the same era and my mates Uncle Fester.
Lift off oversteer on wet roundabouts will never get old though
To be fair I think my expectations might have been raised after driving a 206 GTI and chipped and lowered Leon Cupra R a fair bit recently ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

My M3 isn't a bad 'sleeper' as it could be a 318 as far as half the people realise - and half those that know the M3 badge think it was stuck on there for show anyway!
The mildly tuned with NOS m3 saloon I got came with a 316i badge somewhere for added sleeperness . |

I have a Volvo 440 with some factory options like alloys and a spoiler. A couple of people that don't know much about cars have asked me if its one of the fast ones the Police used to use.
I normally avoid answering the question but really its a 1.6, the heaviest car with the most under powered engine money can buy.
I think it's the opposite of a sleeper ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj

It always makes me cringe inwardly when I read/hear comments like the above, just as it does when I read comments on here along the lines of 'well my GS500 is faster than a Gixer thou because I overtook one the other day'.
Typically, it equates to the rider/driver being a) shit, b) not trying, or c) a combination of a) & b).
To give an example, a while ago I stuck with an Elise in my Mk2 MR2 on a blast around my favourite local twisties. I was having to drive to the very limits of my ability to stick with him and using all the road (where safe), which he wasn't.
Does that mean a Mk2 MR2 is as quick as an Elise?
Nope, I refer you to points a), b) and c) above. I have no doubt that, had he been driving as hard as I was, he would've fucked off well into the distance. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

*Yawns*
I was referring to out and out straight line speed, from a near standing start.
Top speed, a Type R would easily pull away from the Clio, and in the twisties, Paha! The Clio would be dead meat.
But low end power, the Clio seriously pulls hard. Will easily stick with a Type R mate. It's 150bhp.

Not mine but I had one similar
https://www.clubvr4.com/forum/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=3886&d=1273096906
0-60 under 6 seconds and 4wd with an active rear diff, enough to show up most cars out there, I kinda miss mine slightly, but I don't miss running it too much of a pain in the arse to run, servicing, fuel and fixing.
Good fun though when you have a Corsa VXR come flying up the side of you on a dual carriageway and as you come up to a roundabout they slow down and you boot it and leave them standing |

<laughs>
From memory, the CTRs are typically around 6.5s 0-60. The Mk1 172s (which put out more than 150bhp, clue is in the name) are around 7.5s.
I refer you once again to points a), b) and c).
Nippy, yes. Fast, no. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Nippy, yes. Fast, no. |
The 172s put out nowhere near 172bhp at the wheels, especially once they're running an aux belt and a gearbox.
That power reading is taken from the crank/flywheel of a brand new engine with no aux belt or anything.
And even then, my car weighs a LOT less than what a 172 weighs.
As for 0-60, How do you know mine isnt faster than the above figures.
I've not declaired any 0-60 times, so you're just guessing.
I've got a dyno print out of 149bhp for this engine.
Again, I accept RR figures are only for reference when tuning a car, as apposed to an accurate reading of it's power.
The Clio is seriously quick for what it is. Top speed is little more than 130mph, but it makes up for it lower down.

I quite like my sleeper. Doesn't look much different to a 520d but it does pack a bit of a punch. Many people have very little idea of what lurks under the bonnet and I like it like that.

You should be able to push a small 1.8 a bit harder... had my Rover 75 from Canterbury A2 towards the M2 junction down that huge hill indicated just over 140 screaming its absolute arse off..
Shortly after the inlet manifold gasket popped and RAC occurred |

Pretty cool thread. I'm on here all the time but never post but this caught my attention
I have my own little sleeper which I have done all my own work to. It's a 1993 106 xsi. Used to be a 1.4 8v but converted it to 1.6 16v with usual breathing mods. Was 120bhp@wheels. Raced a few people, friends throttle bodied 106, st170's, civic type r's. Didn't lose To those. Time came to get my first turbo car. So rather than buy one I'm turboing my xsi. With my setup I will be looking at 200 bhp @ wheels in a car that will weigh around 850kg. I've fully stripped it out and resprayed the bay. Started putting bits back in. Just waiting for turbo manifold and standalone management |
